Indigenous and traditional knowledge, sustainable harvest, and the long road ahead to reach the 2020 Global Strategy for Plant Conservation objectives

Abstract: Global strategies under the scope of CBD are important in guiding policies and resources for the conservation of biological diversity. This paper emphasized the need to develop actions under the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) with measurable results up to 2020, regarding the status and perspectives related to Targets 12 and 13, focusing on the Brazilian context in order to identify gaps and actions to achieve the goals for conservation and sustainable use of plants. It should be noted that Targe… Show more

“…In this context, source of income from pinhão is the main incentive for the preservation of Araucaria—and its biome (Hanazaki, Zank, Fonseca‐Kruel, & Schmidt, 2018), since it is now considered an endangered species and shows important impact for the regional development of the Southern states of Brazil (Fichino, Pivello, & Santos, 2017; Peralta et al, 2016).…”

“…These ideas have been developed in places such as Colombia and Suriname by the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) (74) and among the peoples of the Rio Negro in the northwestern Amazon, for example (75). Encouraging public policies related to biodiversity and traditional peoples is instituted in the Convention on Biological Diversity (76), as well as in the Global Strategy for the Conservation of Plants (76), even though we are far from effectively achieving this goal (77).…”

“…Several authors have employed a participatory approach to ethnobotanical research [3][4][5][6], where the involvement and active participation of local residents has been instrumental in the decision-making process, the advancement of innovative solutions in co-management projects, and the production, use, and management of plant resources. In the Brazilian scenario, this fact has become increasingly relevant due to the negative political context of the past few decades regarding the conservation of both plant and cultural diversity [7]. Therefore, profound changes are truly needed to recognize and support the participation of local communities in activities directly related to conservation under Aichi Goal 18 as well as to achieve the goals of the Global Plant Conservation Strategy, since Brazil is one of the signatory countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity [7].…”
