Indices of renal tubular function in perinatal asphyxia

Abstract: Aims-To determine and compare two urinary indices of renal tubular function, N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) and 2 -microglobulin ( 2 M), in healthy term neonates and babies with perinatal asphyxia. Methods-In a prospective case-control study using asphyxiated (n=35) and normal control (n=55) infants, urinary NAG and 2 M were assayed at 24-48 hours of life, 4-6 days, and 4-6 weeks. Results-NAG and 2 M were significantly increased at 24-48 hours and 4-6 days in the asphyxiated infants compared with the controls.… Show more

“…Perinatal asphyxia is known to have deleterious effects on all body systems, namely central nervous system (CNS), kidneys and gut. It is probably the primary cause of transient renal impairment or acute renal failure (ARF) in neonates [2]. Renal injury as a consequence of decreased perfusion of the kidney may result from circulatory adaptive responses to perinatal asphyxia [3,4].…”

“…The urinary β 2 -MG level in the urine obtained within 48 h after birth was significantly higher in the CAM group than in the non-CAM group in PT [23][24][25][26] and PT 27-28 (p=0.0018 and p=0.0101 respectively). However, there were no differences in PT [29][30] , PT 31-32 , and PT [33][34] . In addition, the urinary β 2 -MG level at 7 days of age was similar between the CAM group and the non-CAM group in all five groups and there were no significant differences.…”

“…The significantly elevated urinary β 2 -MG levels seen in highly premature neonates disappeared by 1 week after birth. In addition, we analyzed 24 neonates with funisitis as a separate group and their urinary ß 2 -MG levels were 20.7(×10 4 μg/gCr) in PT 23-26 , 13.9 in PT 27-28 , 6.9 in PT [29][30] , and 6.7 in PT 31-32 respectively. There was no particular tendency toward high β 2 -MG levels in the neonates with funisitis.…”

“…18 Pada penelitian ini didapatkan rerata kadar ureum serum kelompok bayi normal 28,8 mg/dl, asfiksia ringan sedang 31,0 mg/dl dan asfiksia berat 41,3 mg/dl. Rerata kadar ureum serum ketiga kelompok berbeda secara bermakna (p<0,001), hal ini menggambarkan terdapat pengaruh asfiksia terhadap peningkatan kadar ureum.…”
