Increasing Incidence of Recent Hepatitis D Virus Infection in HIV-Infected Patients in an Area Hyperendemic for Hepatitis B Virus Infection

Abstract: Our findings show that the incidence of recent HDV infection in HIV/HBV-coinfected patients increased significantly from 1992-2001 to 2007-2011, and was associated with hepatitis flares and syphilis.

“…Also other studies in Africa have showed varying prevalence rates of HDV ranging from 0-50% in different countries [18][19][20] . Similarly in the developed countries, high anti-HDV prevalence's of 10-15% have been documented in recent studies 1,21,22 . Reasons for the variations in the prevalence of HDV exposure or infection are not clear.…”

“…Reasons for the variations in the prevalence of HDV exposure or infection are not clear. This could be a result of modes of transmission whereby in some of these countries there could be higher rates of IVD use 21,22 . In addition, we have confirmed earlier findings that male gender was significantly associated with anti HDV antibody positivity 23,24 .…”

“…It could be related to transmission of resistant strains among patients with risky behaviors since increasing incidence of HDV, HCV, syphilis, and Entamoeba histolytica have been observed in our MSM population in Taiwan2526272829. Indeed, we identified 3 transmission clusters of subtype B in the phylogenetic analysis of integrase sequences with major mutations (Fig.…”

“…RNA sequences were standardized to antigenomic cRNA form reading from normal initial site. The standardized dataset was realigned with woodchuck hepatitis B virus (WHV, accession number J04514, WHV8 strain) by ClustalW and went through minimum manual corrections. The well‐aligned dataset was used to construct the preliminary phylogenetic tree using different algorithm models listed in MEGA.…”
