Increased serum inhibin B levels after varicocele treatment

Abstract: Varicocele treatment can increase serum inhibin B levels, indicating improvement of spermatogenesis and Sertoli cell function. This finding suggests that the pathophysiology of varicocele involves impairment of Sertoli cell function or a different distribution of germ cell stages.

“…Therefore, both PDRN and surgical treatment re-create a microenvironment where the Sertoli cells may normally function. In agreement with this hypothesis, it has been demonstrated (27,28) that varicocelectomy increases inhibin expression.…”

“…In a previous study, it was reported that serum inhibin-B levels were increased after varicocelectomy, and it was indicated that improvement of spermatogenesis and Sertoli cell function [23]. Conversely, Fujisawa et al [24] reported that preoperative inhibin-B concentrations were not a predictor for the evaluation of operation success rate because there was no changing of serum inhibin-B levels after varicocele surgery.…”

“…This suggests that a decrease in sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels with a further increase in free testosterone level results in the increased testicular androgen production after treatment. Pierik et al [11] reported that the serum SHBG level decreased and the free androgen index was significantly increased after varicocele treatment. Additionally, estradiol is the most potent regulator of SHBG levels, and did not show significant change.…”
