Increased Oxidant Stress and Decreased Antioxidant Status in Erythrocytes of Rats Fed with Zinc-deficient Diet

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide (NO), and free radical scavenging enzyme activities in erythrocytes of zinc (Zn)-deficient rats and to investigate the relationship among these parameters in either group. Sixteen male rats with a weight of 40-50 g were used for the experiment. The rats were divided into control (n = 8) and Zn-deficient groups. At the end of the experiment, the animals were anesthetized with ketamine-HCl (Ketalar, 20 mg/kg(-1), i.p.), and the blood was … Show more

“…14,16,23 Cells are equipped with several antioxidant defense systems, including total ÀSH groups, to detoxify the endogenous and exogenous oxidative challenges during aerobic metabolism or when they encounter stress-inducing agents. 26,27 Separate evaluation of the levels under imbalanced conditions or evaluation of these levels for detection of the protective effects of several substances on living organisms may not lead to a definitive conclusion when assessing oxidative balance or imbalance. However, these evaluations may provide an explanation for how oxidative stress-induced tissue damage or preventive effects occur.…”

“…Reduction of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) to GSH is mediated by the widely distributed enzyme GSH reductase (GRD) that uses NADPH as the reducing agent. [16][17][18] Chronic renal failure and vitamin B 6 deficiency share some common features such as peripheral neuropathy, normochromic anemia, depression of the immune system disturbances, improvement with lowprotein diet, and increased body oxalate levels. 19 To our knowledge, there is no study that simultaneously investigates antioxidant potential (AOP), total (enzymatic plus nonenzymatic) superoxide scavenger activity (TSSA), nonenzymatic superoxide scavenger activity (NSSA), GSH-Px, GRD, GST, catalase (CAT), SOD activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in kidney tissue in vitamin B 6 -deficient rats and control group.…”

“…The zinc supplementation showed pronounced recovery as a component of Cu-Zn SOD and helps in converting potentially destructive O rali & Panneerselvam 2007). In addition to prevention of the disrupting effects of lipid peroxidation and membrane protein-oxidation, zinc also acts to stabilize membranes through various mechanisms and promote membrane skeletal/cytoskeletal protein associations, blockage of membrane channels caused by toxins/amphipathic molecules (Bray & Bettger 1990;Taysi et al 2008). Further zinc acts to protect protein thiol groups from oxidation and competes with prooxidants like iron and copper in diminishing their oxidation potential.…”
