Increased local matrix metalloproteinase-8 expression in the periodontal connective tissues of smokers with periodontal disease

Abstract: Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 has been associated with the progression of periodontitis, a common inflammatory disease of the supporting structures of the teeth, and with other degradative diseases. Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing periodontitis that may progress more rapidly and respond poorly to treatment. Therefore, MMP-8 expression was determined by immunofluorescence staining in 60 random, computer-selected fields in the excised periodontal tissues of smokers and non-smokers, balanced for… Show more

“…Another study by Gupta et al (29) also reported a rise in salivary MMP-8 levels as compared to nondiabetic controls. In our study, MMP-8 was also elevated in smokers with chronic periodontitis as compared to the control, which is consistent with the finding of Liu et al (30) who investigated MMP-8 expression by immunofluorescence staining in periodontal tissue samples of smokers and nonsmokers. They reported significantly higher MMP-8 expression in smokers than in nonsmokers.…”

“…Similarly Gursoy UK, et al, [22] found in their study that smokers with periodontitis had a higher expression of MMP-8 with increase in the probing pocket depth as compared to Non-smokers with periodontitis. A significant correlation between increased MMP-8 levels and periodontal disease severity was suggested by Liu et al, [18] who reported increased local MMP-8 expression in the periodontal tissues of smokers compared to the nonsmokers. Our study was in contrast with the studies conducted by Söder et al, [23], where serum MMP-8 concentrations did not differ significantly between the smokers and nonsmokers.…”

“…This could be stated that, MMP-8 is mainly expressed by neutrophils, which are highly recruited to the area due to the inflammation process the greater MMP-8 expression found Group I-B (CPN) than Group II-B (HN) could be partly attributed to their association with inflammation [18].…”

“…A significant correlation between increased MMP-8 levels and periodontal disease severity has been suggested. Liu et al (2006) have reported increased local MMP-8 expression in the periodontal tissues of smokers compared to the non-smokers and a slight increase in the serum MMP-8 concentration, although the difference between the smoker and non-smoker groups did not reach the level of significance.…”
