, Irene Marchesan(4) RESUMO Objetivo: verificar se há predominância de hábitos orais deletérios nos diferentes tipos faciais e aprofundar o estudo da relação entre os hábitos orais deletérios e a oclusão dentária. Método: foram analisados 307 prontuários de pacientes entre 2 e 59 anos de idade de ambos os sexos, encaminhados ao ambulatório do Instituto CEFAC. Foram anotados dos prontuários os hábitos orais deletérios, oclusão dentária, tipologia facial, sexo e idade. Resultados: observou-se que os hábitos com maior prevalência são: chupeta (125 indivíduos), ranger dentes (115 indivíduos) e mamadeira (102 indiví-duos). Dentre as comparações estudadas, as que apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significante foram: a presença do uso da chupeta no grupo de 9 a 12 anos, quando comparado ao de 6 a 9 anos (p=0,0269); presença do hábito de ranger dentes no grupo de 3 a 6 anos quando comparado ao grupo com mais de 20 anos (p=0,0393); presença do hábito de ranger dentes no grupo de oclusão dentária classe I quando comparado ao classe III (p=0,0128) e presença de oclusão dentária classe I no sexo feminino quando comparado ao masculino (p=0,0177). Conclusão: não há relação entre os hábitos orais deletérios e a tipologia facial. Entretanto, há relação entre o hábito oral deletério de ranger dentes com a oclusão dentária Classe I de Angle. Conflito de interesses: inexistente de modo inconsciente. Os principais hábitos que podem suscitar deformidades na oclusão são: onicofagia, bruxismo, mordedura de objetos, mordedura de lábios, além dos mais típicos hábitos de sucção de dedo, chupeta e mamadeira 1,2 . Bottle feeding, increased overjet and Class 2 primary canine relationship: is there any association?

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between bottle feeding and prevalence rates of increased overjet and Class 2 primary canine relationship. The sample consisted of 911 children (461 boys, 450 girls) aged 3 (13.9%), 4 (40.8%), 5 (34%) and 6 (11.3%) years, with complete primary dentition. Information about nutritive and nonnutritive (pacifier and/or digit) sucking habits was collected through questionnaires. Three calibrated dentists (κ: 0.9-1.0 and Rs > 0.90) performed the clinical assessments. The children were divided into four groups: G1 -not bottle-fed; G2 -exclusively bottle-fed; G3 -breast-and bottle-fed, bottle feeding ceased before 3 years of age; and G4 -breastand bottle-fed, bottle feeding ceased between 3 and 4 years of age. Associations between nutritive and nonnutritive sucking behaviors and the malocclusions studied were analyzed by multiple binary logistic regression (α = 0.05). The frequencies of increased overjet were: 25.3% (G1), 38.8% (G2), 39.2% (G3) and 47.8% (G4). The percentages of Class 2 canine relationship were: 27.9% (G1), 48.8% (G2), 43.4% (G3) and 43% (G4). No significant effect of bottle feeding was found. The chances of diagnosing increased overjet (O.R. = 4.42, p < 0.001) and Class 2 canine relationship (O.R. = 4.02, p < 0.001) were greater for children with pacifier and/or digit-sucking habits, compared to those without a history of nonnutritive sucking behavior. It may be suggested that bottle feeding alone is not directly associated with higher prevalence rates of increased overjet and Class 2 canine relationship in the primary dentition.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to develop a mathematical model for the visualization and evaluation of transversal palatal soft tissue changes; and to carry out a statistical evaluation of the changes in vertical and sagittal dimensions after rapid maxillary expansion treatment. Material and Methods:33 Caucasian children with posterior crossbite, 10 boys and 23 girls, aged 7 to 10 years (median 8 years 8 months) were treated with tooth-borne Haas type expander. Dental casts were digitalized by scanner and on the basis of quantitative mesh shape CPD-DCA analysis, coloured morphometrical maps were created. The statistical signifi cance of individual vertex displacements was calculated by performing Hotelling's T2 paired test. To determine the signifi cance of the vertical and sagittal profi le changes, the paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were carried out in 20 patients Results: Visualization of the palatal soft tissue widening showed it to be greatest in the areas of the second deciduous and fi rst permanent molars with maximum of 0.75 mm for each palatal side. Hotelling's T2 paired test showed signifi cant differences of p<0.01 in transversal width dimension. Cephalometric measurements of the changes to vertical and sagittal dimensions were statistically evaluated using the Wilcoxon and paired t-tests, and were shown to have insignifi cant values of p>0.05. Conclusion:The expansion appliance in children resolved the crossbite and led to palatal widening, which was clearly visualized by creating mathematical morphometric models. The cephalometric measurements carried out did not reveal statistically signifi cant relevance in changes to facial vertical or sagittal dimensions.
