Incorporating Graphene Oxide and Gold Nanoclusters: A Synergistic Catalyst with Surprisingly High Peroxidase‐Like Activity Over a Broad pH Range and its Application for Cancer Cell Detection

Abstract: A synergistic graphene oxide-gold nanocluster (GO-AuNC) hybrid has been constructed as an enzyme mimic that is able to show high catalytic activity over a broad pH range, especially at neutral pH. Importantly, the target-functionalized hybrid has been applied as a robust nanoprobe for selective, quantitative, and fast colorimetric detection of cancer cells.

“…The enriched functional groups can interact in an ionic, covalent or non-covalent manner, so that in principle they provide the highest extraction efficiency of biomolecules per unit area . In recent years, the functionalized GO has been exploited to fabricate biosensors for drug delivery Zhang et al, 2010a), bioimaging in living cells Sun et al, 2008), the detection of cancer cell (Tao et al, 2013), glucose (Song et al, 2010), DNA Gao et al, 2014), enzyme (Zhang et al, 2010b), protein , peptides (Han et al, 2010), and cellulose and lignin .…”

“…Successful synthesis of materials like small β −C 3 N 4 crystals, amorphous CN films 6,7 and nanofibers made from C 3 N 4 and CN have been reported. 8 Due to the recent successfull isolation of graphene membranes, 9 with its unique electrical and mechanical properties [10][11][12][13] and various applications in nanotechnology, [14][15][16][17] there has been a renewed interest in two dimensional materials. Other two dimensional structures, such as boron nitride 18 and silicene, 19 among others, have been object of recent investigations.…”

“…A hybrid material based on gold clusters and graphene oxide was synthesized, which demonstrated a surprising synergistic effect. 20 The resulting activities are much higher than those of isolated materials. Surprisingly, pure carbon materials also have an intrinsic peroxidase-like activity.…”
