“…This third antigenic component of the HBV was discovered recently (Magnius and Espmark, 1972;Magnius et al, 1975); it is usually associated with persistent viral infection in chronic hepatitis (Nielsen et al, 1974;Eleftheriou et al, 1975;El Sheikh et al, 1975), has been localised by immunofluorescent techniques in the hepatocytic cytoplasm by one author (Trepo et al, 1976), and is usually demonstrated in the blood of chronic hepatitis B patients. In this study, all patients had chronic aggressive hepatitis (a few of them complicated by cirrhosis).…”
SUMMARY Eighteen liver biopsy specimens from patients with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive chronic aggressive hepatitis were studied by electron microscopy. All cases were selected on the basis of positive liver cell membrane fluorescence for HBsAg on immunohistochemical investigation. Striking changes in the morphology of the liver cell membrane were observed in nearly all cases.

“…Prevalences of HBeAg in asymptomatic carriers in Europe and the United States have been reported to vary from 0 to 14.3% (2,9,18,21,30). Aldershvile et al (4) have reported that the prevalence of HBeAg is different in different ethnic groups.…”

“…The presence of circulating hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is closely related to the number of Dane particles (3,13,19,21,22,26,27,36), DNA polymerase activity (3,13,19,22,26,27,36), and liver damage (9,11,19,26).…”

“…In contrast, persistence of HBeAg for more than 10 weeks after the onset of illness is thought to be associated with a high risk of developing chronic hepatitis (3,21,23) this view is not shared by others, however (10,12). Ohbayashi et al (24) examined 115 Japanese asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and reported that serum HBeAg positivity decreased with age.…”
“…Since it has been reported by Nielsen et al (1974) and by Eleftheriou et al (I975) that patients with acute hepatitis who presented e antigenaemia were at a higher risk of developing chronic hepatitis than those who did not, our patients were observed to determine the evolution of their disease. We could not confirm this observation since all our patients cleared their HBs antigen between i and 2 months after the onset and their liver function was normal 6 months after the onset.…”

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
