a b s t r a c tBiodiesel is a renewable and sustainable biofuel. There are various production processes to produce biodiesel from different kinds of raw materials. In this study, the environmental impacts of biodiesel production from non-edible Jatropha oil and waste cooking oil (WCO) were investigated and compared using systematic life cycle assessment. The results show that crops growing and cultivation of non-edible Jatropha curcas lead to higher environmental impacts compared to WCO process. However, biodiesel production process from Jatropha oil has better performance because the WCO process needs to consume variety of chemicals and requires a large amount of energy for the pretreatment of raw WCO and further chemical conversion to biodiesel. Results also indicate that the collection mechanism of WCO has significant contributions towards environmental impacts. In general, biodiesel production from Jatropha oil shows higher impacts for damage categories of climate change, human health and ecosystem quality whereas biodiesel production from WCO has more severe environmental impacts for resource category. The total environmental impact is 74% less in case of using WCO as raw material compared to non-edible Jatropha oil.

In the recent past, there has been a renewed shift into biomass and other recycled waste sources for biodiesel production and utilization. This is a critical area of research and study in which this present work intends to review and identify gaps in literature by shifting the focus of review to non-plant based sources for biodiesel production. Traditional biodiesel feedstock sources have always presented a conflict of food security versus energy. This shift will be identified in literature to see if change to non-plant-based feedstocks sources has increased food security by discouraging the contribution of commercial farming for the production of biodiesel. This work will identify biodiesel families, generations, traditional and non-traditional feedstocks for biodiesel production. It will also discuss the non-edible biodiesel feedstocks sources in relation to waste to energy recovery. The other factor this work will review is to study how the use of non-plant based feedstocks such as municipal solid waste has improved environmental protection by reducing pollution and landfilling. In other words, this work will review the impact of Using waste municipal solid biomass resources such as waste tyres and waste plastics and changing them into energy sources. This review study aims at increasing environmental awareness, sustainability and reporting the progress made in waste to energy policy shift in many countries globally. This review will look at socio-economic opportunities in recycling besides the academic and research impacts of waste to energy policies adopted in many countries. The review will climax with a conclusion and future trends in waste to energy in relation to municipal solid waste resources.

The Jakarta regulation for waste cooking oil (WCO) shows the desired WCO to Biodiesel supply chain through the DKI Jakarta Governor Regulation Number 167 the Year 2016. Still, the implementation of said regulation proved inefficient. The study aims to analyze the risks in the supply chain because the WCO to Biodiesel supply chain is vulnerable to different risks than the typical supply chain and the green supply chain. The method used in this research is the group analytical hierarchy process (G-AHP) approach to create a consensus model between actors of the supply chain. Deep interviews were conducted with six experts to identify the risks and the normal scale was used to quantify their preference. Then, the PriEst software assisted the risk weight calculation, AHP matrix validation, and consensus modelling. The findings show the supply chain is vulnerable to 23 risks, categorized into six risk categories. The three risks that cause the most uncertainties in the supply chain are supply chain design risk, key supplier risk, and financial source risk. Technology risks and asset failure risks are the least concern because most WCO conversion is not done in Indonesia. These findings would be useful for the government to focus its effort on the most critical risks.
