In vivo Investigation on the Fluoride Content in and on Human Enamel after Topical Applications

Abstract: In this in vivo study the amount of fluoride present on and in human enamel was followed longitudinally for a period of 3 months. The fluoridating agents were an APF gel and the fluoridating lacquers Duraphat and Fluor Protector. The fluoride on the enamel (Fon, mainly as CaF2) was determined by the Caslavska method. The fluoride in the enamel (F2) was measured in five enamel layers removed by acid etching. 12 patients wore the treated enamel specimens and controls for periods … Show more

“…Despite this limitation, Duraphat varnish achieved a caries reduction of 30%, but the caries reduction by Fluor Protector varnish was not significant, probably because fluoride from Fluor Protector had moved to the control side of the mouth. Fluor Protector varnish deposited significantly more fluoride in the enamel than Duraphat varnish, a finding which has also been reported in other studies [17][18][19]. The reason for this finding is unclear.…”

“…CaF 2 can be found weeks [Øgaard et al, 1983] and months after a single fluoride application [Dijkman et al, 1983;Dijkman and Arends, 1988]. At pH 6 and below CaF 2 dissolves and releases fluoride which could induce reprecipitation of fluoride-containing hydroxyapatite.…”

“…Fluoride was analysed using a fluoride electrode (Orion 96-09, Boston, Mass., USA). The amount of KOH-soluble fluoride was calculated as described by Dijkman et al [1983].…”
