In vivo anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ellagitannin metabolite urolithin A

Abstract: 23Urolithin A is a major metabolite produced by rats and humans after consumption of 24 pomegranate juice or pure ellagitannin geraniin. In this study, we investigated the were statistically significant at p < 0.05; however, treatment with urolithin A at 6 h 83 before inflammatory induction by carrageenan showed no effect (Fig. 2B) scan is a powerful tool for identifying the existence of conjugated forms in biofluids. 130For detection of urolithin A conjugates in mouse plasma, neutral loss scans were 131 per… Show more

“…Most of urolithins (i.e., urolithins A, C, and D) exhibited antioxidant activity in a cell-based assay [6]. However, there have been contradictory reports on their antioxidant capacity [62,87]. Recently, urolithins were revealed to display both antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities depending on assay system and conditions by using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, three cell-based assays, copper-initiated pro-oxidant activity (CIPA) assay, and cyclic voltammetry.…”

“…Ellagitannins and their metabolites possess a number of health-promoting qualities, including antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties [18,19]. The health-promoting activity of polyphenol compounds was previously thought to be due to their strong antioxidant properties.…”

“…Ishimoto and colleagues investigated the anti-inflammatory role of urolithin A in carrageenaninduced paw edema in mice (Ishimoto et al, 2011). The volume of paw edema was reduced 1 h after oral administration of urolithin A.…”
