“…Similar results were obtained by Voigt et al (1993) with the tick Amblyomna variegatum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) and it was suggested that EDTA might interfere with Ca + ‐dependent mechanisms. The best feeding and survival rates for artificially fed parasitic mites and ticks were obtained with heparin, a protein that is naturally present in blood (Kirkwood, 1971; Voigt et al , 1993; Bruneau et al , 2001).…”

“…Table 3 shows that 86.9% of mites fed on citrated blood, that is, as well as on heparinized blood in other tests (av. However, unlike northern fowl mites (Table 3), many fewer Dermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer) fed on heparinized blood (18.0~ than citrated blood (70.307o) (Kirkwood, 1971). On the other hand, fewer mites fed on oxalated blood and survived (66.1%), and these mites were all moribund.…”

“…Furthermore, 33 % of these oxalate-fed mites but only 22% of citrate-fed mites were dead by the 12th day. However, unlike northern fowl mites (Table 3), many fewer Dermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer) fed on heparinized blood (18.0~ than citrated blood (70.307o) (Kirkwood, 1971).…”

“…The proteins of interest would probably be concealed due to the lack of evidence to suggest a natural immunity developed against exposed antigen, as previously mentioned. Feeding assays for D. gallinae have been developed previously (Kirkwood 1971;McDevitt et al 2006), and a modification of the McDevitt et al techniques was employed in the current study. This has enabled the preliminary testing of antibodies raised against D. gallinae proteins to determine potential vaccine candidates, before embarking on the more technically demanding and expensive process of in vivo challenge studies.…”
