In vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial efficacy of a new silver-triclosan vs a silver collagen-coated polyester vascular graft against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: Both antimicrobial collagen-coated polymer vascular grafts showed bactericidal activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Although the silver-triclosan vascular graft showed a faster antimicrobial efficacy, the silver graft exhibited its antimicrobial properties after 24 hours. Which concept will protect an implanted vascular prosthetic graft better from bacterial contamination and subsequent infection needs to be investigated further in in vivo animal and clinical studies.

“…Synthetic polymers are ubiquitous in our daily life, and are responsible of the progress in many areas like medical devices (Ricco et al, ), building materials (Akovali, ), or textiles (Anonymous, ). However, their chemical resistance is typically a disadvantage if (surface) functionalization is required (Brueckner et al, ).…”

“…Three patients (all on ECMO) suffered from access site bleeding which required surgical reintervention. 17,18 Finally, Impella placement requires surgical and endovascular skills, multi-imaging modality, and a multidisciplinary team composed of a surgeon, intensivist, perfusionist, angiography suite operator, echocardiographer, and nurse is essential. Patient characteristics, operative details, and postoperative results are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…5,16 Another possible improvement we are currently investigating is the use of silver-coated conduit grafts. 17,18 Finally, Impella placement requires surgical and endovascular skills, multi-imaging modality, and a multidisciplinary team composed of a surgeon, intensivist, perfusionist, angiography suite operator, echocardiographer, and nurse is essential. An operating theater equipped with a C-arm or a hybrid room is essential for the procedure.…”
