In vitro characterization of polyesters of aconitic acid, glycerol, and cinnamic acid for bone tissue engineering

Abstract: In this study, a novel class of polyesters of glycerol, aconitic acid, and cinnamic acid were synthesized along with their hydroxyapatite (HA) composites, and studied for their potential application in bone defect repair. An osteogenic study was conducted with human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) to determine the osteoinductive ability of aconitic acid-glycerol (AG) polyesters, AG:HA (80:20), aconitic acid-glycerol-cinnamic acid (AGC) polyesters, and AGC:HA (80:20) to serve as bone scaffolds. “…In this study, aconitic acid, glycerol and cinnamic acid (Fig. ) were polymerized to yield a hyperbranched polyester product as reported by Kanitkar et al in a similar study . Polymers with excess –OH groups, −COOH groups, and equal number of both groups were synthesized, and the effect on the growth of stem cells was analyzed.…”

“…1) were polymerized to yield a hyperbranched polyester product as reported by Kanitkar et al in a similar study. 29 Polymers with excess -OH groups, −COOH groups, and equal number of both groups were synthesized, and the effect on the growth of stem cells was analyzed. It was observed via alamarBlue ® and picogreen assays (discussed later), that the amount of cinnamic acid seemed to have a profound effect on cell survival and growth profiles.…”

“…44 Cinnamic acid could be a part of osteogenic stimulant composite. 45 Naringenin had stimulant effects on bone similar to estrogen. 46 All these components could be the possible cause for osteoblast stimulation to form new bone.…”
