Cerium Chloride Reduces Enamel Lesion Initiation and Progression in vitro

Aim: Determination of the potential of cerium chloride to reduce artificial carious mineral loss and lesion depth progression. Methods: A total of 160 enamel samples were prepared from 40 bovine lower central incisors. Crowns were sectioned into four pieces, embedded in acrylic resin, ground flat and allocated to eight groups (S1-S4 and D1-D4; n = 20). Specimens of groups D1-D4 were stored (for 7 days) in a demineralizing buffer solution to induce caries-like lesions. Afterwards, samples were treated for 30 s with one of the following solutions: placebo (S1 and D1), amine fluoride (S2 and D2), cerium chloride (S3 and D3) and a combination of fluoride and cerium chloride (S4 and D4). After another 7 (D1-D4) or 14 (S1-S4) days in demineralizing buffer solution, integrated mineral loss and lesion depth were determined by transversal microradiography and compared by Scheffé's post hoc tests. Results: In groups S1-S4, the highest values for integrated mineral loss and lesion depth were observed for group S1 (placebo), the lowest values for group S4. The results in groups S2-S4 were not significantly different. In groups D1-D4, the highest values for integrated mineral loss and lesion depth were observed for group D1 (placebo), the lowest values in groups D3 and D4. In group D2, integrated mineral loss and lesion depth were significantly lower as compared to D1, but significantly higher compared to groups D3 and D4. (D1-D4) or 14 (S1-S4) days in demineralizing buffer solution, the integrated mineral 79 loss (ΔZ) and lesion depth (ld) was determined by transversal microradiography 80 (TMR) and compared by Scheffe`s post hoc tests. 81Results: Within groups S1-S4, the statistically highest ΔZ and ld was observed for 82 group S1 (placebo). Lowest values (ΔZ and ld) were observed for group S4. The 83 results among groups S2-S4 were not significantly different. 84Within groups D1-D4, the statistically highest ΔZ and ld was observed for group D1 85 (placebo). Lowest values (ΔZ and ld) were observed in groups D3 and D4. In group 86 D2 ΔZ and ld was significantly lower as compared to D1, but significantly higher 87 compared to groups D3 and D4.

, a naturally-derived agent, has a significant inhibitory effect on cariogenic bacteria. The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial effect and shear bond strength of an orthodontic adhesive cement containing GCE. A resin-modified glass ionomer cement incorporated GCE at five mass fractions (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8%) to prepare GCE-containing cement for analysis. For the agar diffusion test, cement specimens were placed on agar disk inoculated with Streptococcus mutans (strain ATCC 25175). Following 48 h incubation, the inhibition halo diameter was measured. To assess bacteria colonization susceptibility, S. mutans adhesion to cement specimens was detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) following 48 h incubation. To evaluate bond strength, a total of 50 metal brackets were bonded on premolar surfaces by using cement (10 teeth/group). Following immersion in an artificial saliva for 3 days, shear bond strength (SBS) was measured. The results demonstrated that GCE-containing samples exhibited a larger bacterial inhibition halo than control, and the inhibition zone increased as the GCE mass fraction increased. SEM analysis demonstrated that S. mutans presented a weaker adherent capacity to all GCE-containing cements compared with control, but the difference between each GCE-containing group was not significant. SBS values of each GCE-containing group exhibited no difference compared with the control. In conclusion, GCE-containing adhesive cement exhibits a promising inhibitory effect on S. mutans growth and adhesion. Without compromising bond strength, adding GCE in adhesive cement may be an attractive option for preventing white spot lesions during orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the mechanical properties and antimicrobial efficiency of orthodontic adhesive modified with Salvadora persica (SP) oil, including adhesive remnant index (ARI) and shear bond strength (SBS), specifically antimicrobial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans. METHODS: Forty freshly extracted human premolars were recruited. They were classified into four groups according to the concentration of SP oil added to Heliosit orthodontic adhesive where the control group was with no adhesive modification, alongside three experimental groups, wherein SP oil was integrated into the adhesive at concentrations of 1%, 3%, and 5% weight/weight, respectively. The tooth buccal surface was etched by phosphoric acid gel (37%). The orthodontic brackets utilized were standard stainless steel edgewise 22”. The brackets were bonded with Heliosit by Woodpecker LED light cure for 20 sec. The SBS was assessed using a universal testing machine, and ARI was inspected by a stereomicroscope at 20X magnification power. The antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans was evaluated. The statistical analyses, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Kruskal-Wallis and Duncan were performed where P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: The findings indicated that among the experimental groups, the 3% SP oil group exhibited the highest mean SBS value, following closely behind the control group. Conversely, the mean SBS was lowest for the SP group with a 5% concentration. However, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests revealed no significant differences between groups (P ≥ 0.275, 0.069), respectively. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated a concentration-dependent antibacterial effect, the 5% group exhibiting the highest efficacy. CONCLUSION: Orthodontic adhesive modified with SP oil maintains favorable SBS while demonstrating antimicrobial effects against Streptococcus mutans.
