Various conventional approaches have been reported for the synthesis of nanomaterials without optimizing the role of synthesis parameters. The unoptimized studies not only raise the process cost but also complicate the physicochemical characteristics of the nanostructures. The liquid–plasma reduction with optimized synthesis parameters is an environmentally friendly and low-cost technique for the synthesis of a range of nanomaterials. This work is focused on the statistically optimized production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using a liquid–plasma reduction process sustained with an argon plasma jet. A simplex centroid design (SCD) was made in Minitab statistical package to optimize the combined effect of stabilizers on the structural growth and UV absorbance of AgNPs. Different combinations of glucose, fructose, sucrose and lactose stabilizers were tested at five different levels (−2, −1, 0, 1, 2) in SCD. The effect of individual and mixed stabilizers on AgNPs growth parameters was assumed significant when p-value in SCD is less than 0.05. A surface plasmon resonance band was fixed at 302 nm after SCD optimization of UV results. A bond stretching at 1633 cm−1 in FTIR spectra was assigned to C=O, which slightly shifts towards a larger wavelength in the presence of saccharides in the solution. The presence of FCC structured AgNPs with an average size of 15 nm was confirmed from XRD and EDX spectra under optimized conditions. The antibacterial activity of these nanoparticles was checked against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains by adopting the shake flask method. The antibacterial study revealed the slightly better performance of AgNPs against Staph. aureus strain than Escherichia coli.

Copper ions (Cu) grafted chitosan coating was prepared using the pneumatic spraying method on the silicone rubber surface. Coating's surface properties, morphology, composition, Cu releasing behavior, antibacterial, and anti‐inflammatory activities are investigated and discussed. Surface properties, composition, and morphology were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurements. The antibacterial activity has been tested with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus suspensions in vitro. Besides, the morphology of the biofilm was inspected with a field emission SEM. To evaluate the anti‐inflammatory activity and biosafety of the coating in vivo, the optimized coating samples and control groups were implanted subcutaneously into the back of mice. The bacterial environment model was established by injection of the bacterial suspension. The morphology and bacterial adhered on the surface of catheters and the surrounding tissues were analyzed after 5 days of implantation. As in vitro results, the number of adhered bacterial on the surface of the silicon rubber surface was decreased, and the anti‐inflammatory rate was increased by the intensify of the Cu content in chitosan coating. As for in vivo results, after 5 days of implantation, there was no evident inflammation in the surrounding tissues of all catheters in all without the S. aureus injected group. In the injected chitosan/Cu coated group; the inflammation, the number of the adhered bacteria were observed less than other injected samples without Cu; no inflammation were noticeable. Results indicate that the Cu‐modified chitosan coating can confer excellent antibacterial and anti‐inflammatory activity as applied on medical catheters.

Biofilm-formed enterococcal urinary tract clinical isolates (n = 92) were used for studying the antibiofilm activity of cinnamon, ginger, and chemical AgNPs. The average particle sizes of cinnamon, ginger, and chemical AgNPs were 8.7, 41.98, and 55.7 nm, respectively. The results of Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed that phytocompounds, such as cinnamaldehyde and gingerol, were the main compounds incorporated in the synthesis of cinnamon and ginger AgNPs, respectively. The purity and crystalline nature of the AgNPs have been confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray Diffraction analysis. The results of antimicrobial activity showed that MIC of ginger, cinnamon, and chemical AgNPs were 37.64, 725.7, and 61.08 μg/ml, respectively. On studying the antibiofilm activity of AgNPs at sub-MIC values (1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 MIC), the results revealed that it was concentration dependent. Therefore, further studies were carried out to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of AgNPs at a concentration of 18 μg/ml. The results showed that ginger and chemical AgNPs reduced the formed biofilm to 39.14% and 65.32% and the number of adherent cells on the urinary catheter surface to 42.73% and 69.84%, respectively, as compared to that of the control, while cinnamon AgNPs showed no significant activity. Accordingly, ginger AgNPs had the most potent antibacterial and antiadherent activity against biofilm-associated enterococcal isolates.
