In Defence of Dialetheism: A Reply to Beziau and Tkaczyk

Abstract: Abstract. In recent editions of this journal, Jean-Yves Beziau [8] and Marcin Tkaczyk [42] have criticised a prominent dialetheic logic and common arguments for dialetheism, respectively. While Beziau argues that Priest's logic LP commits the dialetheist to trivialism, the thesis that all propositions are true, Tkaczyk maintains that the arguments traditionally proposed for dialetheism are faulty and ultimately that dialetheism should be rejected as self-refuting. This paper shows that both are mistaken in th… Show more

“…19). However, in this case too, the clauses for the Boolean connectives in the dialetheist's logic are expected to match those of classical logic, with the dialetheist's logic diverging from classical logic in allowing for truth-value gluts (see Martin 2018). look like (see, for example , Priest 2006b;Beall 2009); but, all agree that (Dvi) is a desideratum for their logic.…”

“…The first studies on PL were developed in 1958, when hierarchical systems were proposed. In 1987, the annotated logic was developed to provide a basis for PL programming, which evolved into PAL, a more robust PL for practical application in decision-making processes [25,[42][43][44][45].…”

“…They must endorse a different logic, one appropriate to their own commitments. These logics have three essential properties (Martin 2018), being: Dialetheic: A logic L is dialetheic iff L permits contradictions, formally conceived as formulae of the form A  ¬A, to be true in an interpretation.…”
