Improving the Predictive Accuracy of Static-99 and Static-2002 With Older Sex Offenders

Abstract: Actuarial risk assessment scales and their associated recidivism estimates are generally developed on samples of offenders whose average age is well below 50 years. Criminal behavior of all types declines with age; consequently, actuarial scales tend to overestimate recidivism for older offenders. The current study aimed to develop a revised scoring system for two risk assessment tools (Static-99 and Static-2002) that would more accurately describe older offenders' risk of recidivism. Using data from 8,390 sex… Show more

“…The ten-item Static-99R (Helmus et al, 2012) is a modified version of the Static-99 (Hanson & Thornton, 2000), the most widely used actuarial sex offender risk assessment instrument. It is based on empirically validated risk factors for sexual recidivism.…”

“…It is based on empirically validated risk factors for sexual recidivism. The modified Static-99R with revised age-weights has been shown to better estimate sexual as well as violent recidivism rates in the validation sample than its former versions (Helmus et al, 2012). Although Static-99R coding rules exclude internet sexual offenders, we chose to use it for this offender subgroup as well.…”

“…The Static-99R items are identical to Static-99 with the exception of updated age weights. Static-99R, Static-2002R (Hanson & Thornton, 2003Helmus et al, 2012) is an empirical actuarial risk assessment tool for adult male sexual offenders (see also www.static99.org). It has 14 items grouped into five main subscales: age at release, persistence of sex offending, sexual deviance, relationship to victims, and general criminality.…”

“…Static-99R (Hanson & Thornton, 2000;Helmus, Thornton, Hanson, & Babchishin, 2012) is an empirically derived actuarial risk assessment tool designed to predict sexual recidivism in adult male sexual offenders using commonly available information (see also www.static99.org). It has 10 items related to demographic (e.g., age), criminal history (e.g., past sexual offences), and victim choice (e.g., any male victims).…”

“…All participants' files were studied by trained coders to retrospectively code the items of the STATIC-99R (Hanson & Thornton, 2000;Helmus, Thornton, Hanson, & Babchishin, 2012). Of note, none of the offenders were assessed for risk level with a structured actuarial risk assessment instrument at their conviction, nor at the start of their treatment.…”
