Polymeric nanocomposites are the materials incorporating nanosized inclusions into the polymer matrixes. The result of the addition of nanoparticles/fibers is a drastic improvement in properties that may include mechanical, electrical, thermal conductivity, or even the acoustical properties. Polymer nanocomposites have spawned huge interest for the development of high‐performance products such as lightweight sensors, thin‐film capacitors, batteries, flame retardant products, biodegradable and biocompatible materials, and so on. The field of polymer nanocomposites has been at the forefront of research in the polymer community for the past few decades and an extremely large number of scientific papers have been published. Nevertheless, application‐oriented guidelines for selecting the ecofriendly nanocomposites for advanced industrial applications are missing in the state of the art. This review article summarizes the current state‐of‐the‐art polymeric nanocomposites, highlighting prominent nanofillers categorized based on their applications, origins, dimensional characteristics, and so on. Each filler type contains a short description of its main feature together with the most relevant and potential applications. To address the global concern about nondegradable wastes, novel green alternatives of each nanofiller type are discussed. Special attention is also given to the biocompatibility properties of the composites. This study provides a state‐of‐the‐art road map to select multifunctional polymeric nanocomposites from huge varieties for advanced industrial applications.

Summary: Ground tire rubber was thermo-mechanically modified with using a corotating twin screw extruder. Modification of GTR was conducted in autothermal conditions. Styrene-butadiene rubber and modified ground tire rubber blends were prepared via two-roll milling. Obtained compounds were cured with conventional system (sulfur/vulcanization accelerator ratio was 2:1). During this research three commonly vulcanization accelerators (MBT, TBBS, TMTD) were used. Curing characteristics, static mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, resilience), dynamic mechanical properties, swelling degree and thermal properties of obtained SBR/mGTR blends were determined. SBR/modified GTR blends with higher amount of modified GTR shown improvement in tensile strength, on the other hand vulcanization accelerator type had strong influence on curing parameters, tensile strength, elongation at break, swelling degree and glass transition temperature. The best curing and mechanical properties were estimated for SBR/mGTR blend with 50 phr mGTR cured with TMTD accelerator.

A contactless method based on energy shift of high‐energy cut‐off of the x‐ray bremsstrahlung, the so‐called Duane Hunt Limit and a conventional low voltage electrical technique (three‐probes technique) is applied on thermal and corona aged silicone rubber (SiR) to measure, respectively, the surface potential, Vs, and the surface resistivity, ρs. The effect of aging on these quantities, representing the dielectric properties, is studied. The results are highly reproducible and highlight a good correlation between Vs and ρs. It was observed that thermal aging combined with electrical aging deteriorates more the electrical properties of the polymer than thermal aging alone. Explanations for electrical characteristics (Vs, ρs) change with aging are supported by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra analysis and a chemical mechanism of aging in three steps (i.e., oxidation‐polycondensation, degradation, and thermal cracking). The surface degradation of the polymer is revealed by images of surface morphology obtained by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Roughness is greater for combined thermal and corona aging mode compared to thermal aging alone. In addition, the surface degradation of SiR polymer is confirmed by the loss of its hydrophobicity.
