“…Salvia miltiorrhiza , known as Danshen in Chinese traditional medicine, is effective at promoting blood circulation and removing (or decreasing) blood stasis. Water-soluble components of Salvia miltiorrhiza can improve blood parameters in elderly guinea pigs, reduce blood viscosity, and significantly enhance oxygen transport capacity [24]. Water-soluble extract components of Wolfiporia extensa may retard aging by increasing the content of skin hydroxyproline [25].…”

“…Based on previously reported evidences (Huang et al, 2001;Quyang et al, 2001;Ling et al, 2005;Cheng, 2007;You et al, 2007;Hou et al, 2007;Han et al, 2008), we hypothesized that aqueous extract of Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza might exert its antiatherosclerotic effects through the regulation of oxidative levels in SMCs. The Hcy-induced protein profile of rat aortic smooth muscle A10 cells treated with SMAE might therefore provide valuable and unique information concerning the therapeutic mechanisms of Salvia miltiorrhiza root constituents in some cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…Hou et al (2007) also proved that RSR could improve abnormal hemorheological parameters in aging guinea pigs by decreasing blood viscosity and viscoelasticity, reducing erythrocyte membrane malondialdehyde levels, and increasing the oxygen transport efficiency of whole blood. 100 s −1 of WBV, PCV, RBC, TRE, EAI and K in SF group; 100 s −1 and 3 s −1 of WBV, TRE, hWRV, lWRV, ERC and EAI in CXR group; and RBC and K in GKR group significantly decreased, which showed that SF, CXP and GKP possessed different degree of antithrombotic activity, consistent with those of many studies (Liao, 2002;Xiao et al, 1996;Yan et al, 2003).…”

“…In the present study, changes of the parameters between before and after administration were as follows: in the RSR and SF groups, whole blood reduced viscosity at low shear rate and erythrocyte rigid coefficient of after administration were significantly smaller than those of before. It is generally known that reduction of blood viscosity could decrease the risk of the formation of blood clots (Hou et al, 2007) and reduction of erythrocyte rigid coefficient could increase the erythrocyte deformability. So RSR and SF had the activity of activating blood flow on normal hemorheology; comparing with before administration, in the GKR group only whole blood reduced viscosity at low shear rate after administration was markedly decreased, and in the CXR group whole blood viscosity, HGB, RBC and K of after administration were quietly decreased.…”
