Improvement of dermal parameters in aged skin after oral use of a nutrient supplement

Abstract: PurposeSkin aging is a progressive and degenerative process caused by a decrease in the physiological functions of the skin tissue. In addition, environmental factors as well as concomitant diseases and lifestyle (nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, etc) negatively impact the aging process. An association between oral administration of collagen peptides combined with vitamin C and extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa and Aristotelia chilensis (Delphynol®) (Eximia Firmalize Age complex®) on dermal thickness was… Show more

“…Thus, maintenance of the amount of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the body may aid in the prevention of aging. Therefore, in order to prevent various phenomena caused by a decrease in collagen and hyaluronic acid, namely an increase in wrinkles in the skin and decrease in the cartilage in joints, many cosmetics and health foods containing collagen and hyaluronic acid have been developed and are regularly taken by many people [8][9][10]. Cosmetics are expected to be absorbed from the skin and foods are expected to be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…However, even with this increase in patient interest and market share, the use of collagen supplementation in dermatology remains controversial due to the lack of regulation on quality and quantity of ingredients in OTC collagen supplements [164], [171]. Maria et.al, 2019 reported improvement of general skin conditions, acting in different mechanisms by oral supplementation and topical application of hydrolyzed proteins [165].…”

“…Aging of the skin is a degenerative process driven by a decline in physiological function. While it is partially intrinsic, extrinsic factors, such as pollution, sun exposure, and lifestyle can increase oxidation levels and contribute to chronic inflammation, which can accelerate aging processes . Lifestyle factors can include nutritional and smoking statuses.…”

“…While it is partially intrinsic, extrinsic factors, such as pollution, sun exposure, and lifestyle can increase oxidation levels and contribute to chronic inflammation, which can accelerate aging processes. 1 Lifestyle factors can include nutritional and smoking statuses. The progression of skin aging is associated with decreased collagen density and dermal thickness in addition to a reduction in the synthesis and replacement of vital structural proteins.…”
