Skin aging is primarily due to alterations in the dermal extracellular matrix, especially a decrease in collagen I content, fragmentation of collagen fibrils, and accumulation of amorphous elastin material, also known as elastosis. Growth factors and cytokines are included in several cosmetic products intended for skin rejuvenation because of their ability to promote collagen synthesis. Matrikines and matrikine-like peptides offer the advantage of growth factor-like activities but better skin penetration due to their much smaller molecular size. In this review, we summarize the commercially available products containing growth factors, cytokines, and matrikines for which there is evidence that they promote skin rejuvenation.

Recent research advances in the molecular and biochemical processes involved in wound healing and skin aging have led to the development of innovative cosmeceuticals that rely on peptides, proteins, and growth factors to enhance skin health. Although the long-term benefits of these products have not been fully tested and evaluated, evidence of the benefits derived from their use is steadily growing. This study describes the peptides, proteins, and growth factors that are most frequently used in cosmeceuticals and discusses their potential benefits and practical use in dermatology.

Growth factors play an important role in reversing the effects of skin aging mediated by chronological and environmental factors. Excessive oxidation of intra- and extracellular components result in breakdown of collagen and elastin network in the dermis and produce the effect of facial aging. Topical application of human growth factors in multiple clinical studies has been shown to reduce the signs and symptoms of skin aging, including statically significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and increase in dermal collagen synthesis. More double-blind and controlled studies are needed to confirm the preliminary clinical effects of growth factor products, and more controls on product quality and stability need to be established.
