Infectious and parasitic diseases affecting women during their reproductive age may result in vertical transmission. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence for TORSCH among pregnant women receiving care at a university hospital. Records of 574 pregnant women who received medical attention from January 2006 to December 2007 were assessed. The mean age was 27.2 ± 6.5 years ranging from 13 to 44. The results of the immunodiagnostic tests were: 62.0% (345/556) for IgG and 3.4% (19/556) for IgM anti-T. gondii; 93.1% (433/465) for IgG and 0.6% (3/465) for IgM anti-rubella; 0.9% (5/561) for VDRL; 1.8% (10/554) for HBsAg; 0.7% (4/545) for anti-HCV and 2.1% (11/531) for HIV. In conclusion, the results of immunodiagnostic tests for the TORSCH panel among pregnant women attending a perinatal service of a university hospital are in agreement with those reported by previous studies and by governmental sources

Introduction:The aim of this study was to establish the incidence rates of congenital syphilis in the South Region of Brazil from 2001 to 2009. Methods: Temporal ecological and descriptive study based on the cases recorded by the System of Information of Notifi able Diseases. Results: The incidence of congenital syphilis has been increasing in the South Region of Brazil since 2004; the highest incidence rates were in women who received prenatal care (113.5 new cases per 100,000 births, p<0.001), who were diagnosed with syphilis at pregnancy (69.8 new cases per 100,000 births, p=0.001), and whose partner did not undergo treatment for syphilis (53.1 new cases per 100,000 births, p=0.001). Conclusions: The population of the present study mostly consisted of adult black women with low educational levels who attended prenatal care, who were diagnosed with syphilis during pregnancy, and whose partners were not treated for syphilis. Based on these results, actions are recommended to reduce the incidence of this disease, which is preventable by early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The present was merely an ecological study; therefore, further investigations are necessary to elucidate the causes of these fi ndings.

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a incidência da sífilis congênita no Ceará de 2000 a 2009; descrever o perfil epidemiológico das gestantes cujos recém-nascidos tiveram sífilis congênita e verificar a realização do pré-natal e do tratamento dos seus parceiros. Trata-se de estudo documental, realizado em julho de 2010 a partir do banco de dados disponível no Núcleo de Informação e Análise em Saúde, que contém as informações das fichas do Sistema Nacional de Agravos de Notificação. Foram notificados 2.930 casos de sífilis congênita, demonstrando uma série histórica ascendente ano a ano. A maioria das gestantes realizou pré-natal (2.077; 70,9%), possuía de 20 a 34 (1.836; 62,7%) anos, nenhuma ou pouca escolaridade (1.623; 55,4%), O tratamento inadequado das gestantes e a falta de tratamento dos parceiros mostraram-se como realidade no SUS-CE. A incidência de sífilis congênita é um indicador da qualidade da assistência pré-natal. Logo, seu aumento nos últimos dez anos ressalta a necessidade de ações voltadas para seu controle.
