PurposeThis study aims to assess the online presence of three Portuguese low-density territories and analyze the communication strategies employed by public and private entities within each municipality. The alignment between public and private entities within each municipality is also examined as a potential factor that could impact the effectiveness of digital communication strategies.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative methodology that employed content analysis and interviews to gather data from selected public and private entities in each of the municipalities under study was used.FindingsDespite the widespread availability of digital communication tools, the municipalities under study are yet to fully exploit their potential to promote and publicize their offerings. This could be attributed to several factors such as a lack of knowledge and/or resources and a defective strategic approach to digital communication.Practical implicationsThe major obstacle in maximizing the potential of digital communication tools in low-density destinations was not solely a result of restricted access. Rather, it was largely due to insufficient knowledge and resources required for their effective utilization, coupled with a lack of aligned vision among various stakeholders.Originality/valueThe competitive landscape in which tourist actors operate has transformed significantly because of the widespread adoption of digital communication led by social networks. However, studies exploring digital communication in low-density territories are still scarce. This study adds new insights into the main factors that hinder the efficient use of digital communication in these regions.

Digital Economy Development and the Urban–Rural Income Gap: Intensifying or Reducing

Based on theoretical analysis, this study examines the relationship between the development of China’s digital economy and the urban–rural income gap by using an empirical model to test panel data for 30 provinces in China from 2009 to 2019. The results of the study reveal that (1) there is a “U-shaped” relationship between the digital economy and the urban–rural income gap, with the gap narrowing in the early stages of development and widening in the medium-to-long term. (2) The development of the digital economy in peripheral regions will have an impact on the urban–rural income gap in the region through spatial spillover. (3) The heterogeneity tests reveal that the digital economy has a stronger impact on the urban–rural income gap in western China and a weaker impact in the east. (4) A double difference test using “Broadband Rural” construction as a policy shock variable reveals that the pilot project helped reduce the urban–rural income gap. This study deepens our understanding of the digital economy for integrated urban–rural development. It provides a theoretical basis and practical experience for enhancing the living standard of rural residents and promoting the integrated development of urban and rural areas.

Limited access to finance is a major obstacle in the development of an area, especially rural communities. This study aims to analyze financial inclusion in the Micro Small-Scale Creative Industry towards the development of rural communities in Binjai City. This research uses a qualitative research approach with a case study method. Furthermore, a series of observations and interviews were conducted on the informants through a purposive sampling technique which was further developed through the snowball sampling technique. The results of the study inform that financial inclusion in micro-small-scale creative industries that are managed that are less educated, small-scale, have limited assets and are located in rural areas tend to have limited financing information as well as major obstacles so that the development of rural communities does not increase. The diversity of regional characteristics such as internet access and the use of financial inclusion in the creative industry, especially in obtaining banking information, alternative sources of financing that are more diverse can encourage improvements in the development of rural community areas in Binjai City. This study recommends the importance of education through training and mentoring as well as the use of the internet for Micro Small Scale Creative Industry entrepreneurs in rural Binjai City.
