This paper reviews the impact of four alternative employment initiatives — enterprise zones, local authority initiatives, the job creation initiatives of nationalised industries and worker co-operatives — in one UK region. Their job creation, impact and potential is assessed in the context of widespread job loss in the region and the demise of government industrial policies.
