In current economic conditions, one of the major problems in the textile and apparel industry is unable to determine the unnecessary movements of resources (operators, machines, materials). Especially during the production processes, to adjust and decrease the movements of the resources are more difficult, because the focus is mostly on the workers and materials. "Method Study" has developed for resolving these challenges. The string diagram which is one of the techniques of the method study, helps to provide minimum movements of the resources during manufacturing activities. In this study, the production activities of a clothing company were examined with the help of the string diagram to achieve the objectives of eliminating unnecessary movements of the resources, increasing the working speed, providing better working conditions, balancing the production lines. So in the study, the current status of the production system and the parts to be improved were determined. In this direction, the string diagram and line balancing methods were applied for improvements and generation of a new layout plan. As a result of the research, the journal distance of the pieces before sewing together for obtaining the end product was shortened by 39% and the number of operators working in the line was reduced from 32 to 26.

Dünyada hızla gelişen teknoloji ile birlikte firmalar artık hem ulusal alanda hem de uluslararası alanda rekabet edebilmek için kendilerini sürekli geliştirmek zorundadır. Bu anlamda kalite, maliyet ve müşteri memnuniyeti gibi kavramlar gün geçtikçe daha önemli hale gelmekte ve yalın üretim işte bu noktada modası geçmeyen bir üretim olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. 1950'ler de Toyota Üretim Firması ile temelleri atılan yalın üretim bugün hale güncelliğini korumaktadır. Sıfır hata ve sıfır stok ilkesini benimseyen yalın üretim hem üretim sektöründe hem de hizmet sektöründe de uygulanmaktadır. Yalın üretim uygulayan işletmeleri maliyetlerini azaltmakta ve kaynaklarını verimli kullanabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada bir demir-çelik üretim hattında yalın üretim uygulaması yapılmış ve elde edilen sonuçlar yorumlanarak işletmeye önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Araştırmada değer akış haritalama yöntemi ve sistem benzetimi ve modellemesi ile üretim sürecindeki performanslar ortaya koyulmuştur. Aynı zamanda sevkiyat bölümündeki stoklar da azaltılmış, emniyet stoku yeterli olacak şekilde süreç iyileştirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar ışığında işletmede yapabilecek iyileştirmeler önerilmiştir.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the role of rational culture in the relationship between lean manufacturing practices and operational productivity in the machinery and equipment industry.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a cross-sectional quantitative approach to conduct the research. Using an online survey questionnaire, 118 responses were collected. SPSS was used to assess validity, reliability and hypothesis testing of the study variables. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to investigate the moderating effects of rational culture.FindingsThe study results reveal that quick setup and quality control were significantly related to operational productivity. Rational culture was a significant quasi-moderator.Practical implicationsThis study highlights the importance of quick setup and quality control for machinery and equipment firms to gain higher operational productivity. Rational culture could be used to drive the firms toward greater achievements in this regard.Originality/valueThe use of rational culture as a quasi-moderator in the relationship between lean manufacturing practices and operational productivity is unprecedented. This study offers new findings by introducing the role of rational culture to enhance the effects of lean manufacturing practices on operational productivity.
