This study analyses the technical and private economic aspects of integrating a large capacity of electric driven heat pumps (HP) in the Greater Copenhagen district heating (DH) system, which is an example of a state-of-the-art large district heating system with many consumers and suppliers. The analysis was based on using the energy model Balmorel to determine the optimum dispatch of HPs in the system. The potential heat sources in Copenhagen for use in HPs were determined based on data related to temperatures, flows, and hydrography at different locations, while respecting technical constraints. The Balmorel model was developed further in order to provide a better representation of HPs, for analysing the seasonal variations of COP, and to represent the difference in performance of HPs connected to either distribution or transmission networks. The optimization yields roughly 3,500 full load hours (FLH) for the HPs connected to the DH distribution networks when considering a current scenario. In a zero carbon-dioxide emission scenario expected in year 2025, approximately 4,000 FLH, are achieved. In the case where HPs are connected to the DH transmission network at elevated temperatures, their operation decreases by roughly 1,000 FLH. No significant impact was found when comparing fixed and varying operation characteristics of the HP.

Uncertainties towards a fossil-free system with high integration of wind energy in long-term planning

There is a large amount of parametric uncertainties that might affect long-term energy planning, due to the inherent variability connected to the future. Most of these uncertainties are stochastic, i.e. they cannot be reduced, but can be better characterized. In an attempt to address this issue, studies often explore different alternative scenarios or perform local sensitivity analyses. While acknowledging their importance, it is evident that their traditional scope must be reconsidered, as those methods cannot consider interactions among parameters and hence might omit parameters that are highly influential. This study aims to explore the whole uncertainty range in order to identify the most critical parameters towards fossil-free energy systems with high integration of wind-based electricity. Denmark is used as a case study of a country with large wind resources, which are increasingly exploited. It pursues three steps: 1) Selection of parameters and characterization of their uncertainties, 2) Global sensitivity analyses through Morris sampling, and 3) Uncertainty propagation and Monte Carlo runs using Latin Hypercube sampling. Offshore wind upscaling will depend on technological improvements related to capital costs or efficiencies as well as on the system integration constraints. Hence, increasing deployments of offshore wind would require policies that foster technological learning, while promoting the cost-efficient integration of an increase in participation in the power mix, such as grid transmission expansion. Therefore, methods that deal with the whole uncertainty space should, to a larger extent, be implemented when uncertainties are assessed in association with long-term planning of systems with high integration of fluctuating renewable energy.

A review on China's wind power accommodation in the background of “Internet+” strategy

Summary The consumption of fossil fuel has resulted in global warming, environmental pollution, and many other crucial problems. Replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy has become an important issue over the recent decades. As a renewable clean energy, wind power is a relatively well‐developed and promising energy method for current technology development in China. Under the background of growing demand for electricity and enhancing awareness for environmental, the “Internet+ wind power” concept has emerged based on both the wind power's characteristics that renewable and non‐polluting, and the rapid development of the Internet in China. Through querying an amount of literature and information, this paper reveals the resource endowment and policy environment about wind power and energy Internet at first. Then, the PEST‐SWOT strategy analysis model is used to analyze the internalities (strengths and weaknesses) and the externalities (opportunities and threats) of “Internet+ wind power”. According to these results, the paper puts forward some measures (development and utilization, business mode) for wind power accommodation. Then some policy recommendations have been proposed. The government should provide favorable conditions for wind power grid with the “Internet+” technology innovation.
