Impact of oral health on physical and psychosocial dimensions: an analysis using structural equation modeling

Abstract: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of impact of oral health conditions on physical and psychosocial dimensions among adolescents and to identify factors associated with severity of impact. The impact of oral health status was assessed by the instrument Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). The covariates were: socioeconomic status, habits and health care, use of dental services, and normative conditions of oral health. Structural equation modeling was performed, and 15.6% of adolescents reported impac… Show more

“…The occurrence of periodontitis is higher in older age groups, whereas individuals with low income, low schooling level and smoking habit are more exposed to both oral health problems. Factors, such as sex, age, family income, schooling level, and smoking habits are also associated with the severity of the impact on quality of life related to oral health …”

“…These findings agree with the ones of another study [18], in which the narratives of cancer patients and their relatives/caregivers pointed to the need for families residing in the interior of the state to travel to specialized services, in addition to the difficulties associated with the process of referral among health care units, which account for the delays in actual care delivery. Within that context, unfavorable socioeconomic conditions are associated with less use of dental care services, resulting in poor oral health [19].…”
