Impact of economic activity on geoecological transformation of the basin of the Zhovtenka River (Ukraine)

Abstract: The article presents the results of the study on the current geoecological condi- tion of the basin of the Zhovtenka River. The study object corresponded to the criteria of a small river, having the length of 42 km and the area of the drainage basin of 293 km2. According to the geographic peculiarities and the level of anthropogenic impact it is a typical small river of the Ukrainian Steppe zone. At the current stage of water management, the river and its tributaries are significantly regu… Show more

“…This leads to fragmentation of their riverbeds; decreased self-cleaning ability; deterioration of water quality; the accumulation of solid runoff; significant contamination of reservoirs with chemical compounds; environmental hazards in the use of such water resources. Without prior improvement in water quality, its use is rather limited for irrigation, fish farming, water supply, or recreation purposes [3][4][5].…”

“…To enable priority assessment of the ecological status and level of anthropogenic impact on rivers, it is proposed to introduce a river fragmentation coefficient (K fr ) [ANDREEV et al 2021]. It is suggested to calculate the coefficient by the ratio of the total number of artificial water bodies to the length of the river or the river catchment area (within the administrative unit -region):…”

“…As has been repeatedly noted by many researchers [52,53], this conflicts with the landscape approach to the organization of a natural area, including its basin structure. Among studies of the anthropogenic transformation of river basins, the following works can be noted [54][55][56][57][58][59][60].…”
