“…It is seen that the values of roughness gradually increase with increasing exposure time. The roughness is increased due to the removal of top few monolayers of the polymer films, caused by the impact of electric discharge of corona on the surface, going from a R a value of 1.35 nm without treatment to 3.99 nm with an exposure time of 40 s to corona treatment which is similar to those reported in literature (Han, Kim, & Park, 2014;Rocca-Smith et al, 2016). Following the theory of adhesion (Shenton & Stevens, 2001), this roughness could act positively on the coating adhesion by creating much more specific surface.…”

“…As concerns the barrier properties of PLA films, water vapor permeability (WVP) values (ranging from 1 × 10 −14 to 4 × 10 −14 kg·m/s·m·Pa) [ 7 , 8 , 28 , 29 ] are low compared to starch films but oxygen permeability is very high (2.4 × 10 −15 kg·m/s·m·Pa) [ 30 ]. As gas permeability is a problem for PLA, Rocca-Smith et al [ 31 ] applied a corona treatment to PLA films and observed improved gas (He, O 2 , CO 2 ) barrier properties, with modifications in both the surface and bulk of the films. In particular, the surface analysis revealed an increase in polarity and roughness, while some modifications of the mechanical properties and degree of crystallinity were also observed in the resulting films.…”

“…The AFM images of linear PLA, 3-arm PLA and high branching PLA film are shown in figure 6 . Contact angle was affected by surface topography and roughness [ 45 ]. Figure 6 a shows a sharper peak within the 30 nm range on linear PLA film, indicating that the repulsive force of linear PLA was small and performs a phenomenon of relaxation.…”
