Impact of changes in balance and walking capacity on the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease

Abstract: Parkinson' s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and it affects 0.3% of the population at large 1 . Pathologically, PD is characterized by the loss of the dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra pars compacta, causing the reduction of the striatal dopamine levels 2 . Clinically, PD is marked by the presence of tremors at rest, rigidity and bradykinesia 2 . With the PD progression, other impairments occur, such as postural instability 3 and gait dysfunctions 4 . These impair… Show more

“…Muitos estudos apontam a relação entre disfagia e Doença de Parkinson [2][3][4]9,[15][16][17][18][19] , porém poucos discutem a influência da disfagia na qualidade de vida [20][21][22][23]29,30 . Os estudos que falam sobre a qualidade de vida na DP evidenciam sobre as alterações motoras e da qualidade de vida de uma maneira geral.…”

“…It is a rapid and practical instrument that indicates the patient's general condition. In its original form, it comprised five stages of classification to assess the severity of PD based on postural instability, rigidity, tremors and bradykinesia (18,19).…”

“…Within a multidimensional evaluation model, the Hoehn and Yahr scale (range 0-5) has been used to define the degree of impairment [17,18]. The Tinetti Scale (range 0-28, cut-off value for high risk of falling \19 points) has been used to detect the risk of falling and to study the differences in sacropelvic morphology.…”
