Impact of 18F-FDG PET scan on the prevalence of benign thoracic lesions at surgical resection

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The main utility of 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) lies in the staging of lung cancer. However, it can also be used to differentiate indeterminate pulmonary lesions, but its impact on the resection of benign lesions at surgery is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of benign lesions at thoracotomy carried out for suspected lung cancer, before and after the introduction of PET scanning in a large thoracic surgical centre. “…Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 18 F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18 F-FDG) has been widely utilized for the diagnosis, staging and restaging of different types of cancer ( 5 - 7 ) . Differently from conventional imaging methods capable of detecting only anatomical changes, 18 F-FDG PET/CT is capable of providing information related to glucose metabolism in the various organs and tissues.…”

“…With this new criteria adopted by Capes, originated from many complaints of the Brazilian journals editors, with repeated and insistent editorials (5,6) published in almost all Brazilian journals, the possibility is now open for Brazilian journals to grow in importance, generating citations and attracting high level papers. RB has received and published articles from important foreign groups (USA (7,8) , Canada (9) , England (10) ), with the participation of internationally known authors. We need to invest our knowledge, our articles and our references in it.…”
