Impact Damage Ascertainment in Composite Plates Using In-Situ Acoustic Emission Signal Signature Identification

Abstract: Barely visible impact damage (BVID) due to low velocity impact events in composite aircraft structures are becoming prevalent. BVID can have an adverse effect on the strength and safety of the structure. During aircraft inspections it can be extremely difficult to visually detect BVID. Moreover, it is also a challenge to ascertain if the BVID has in-fact caused internal damage to the structure or not. This paper describes a method to ascertain whether or not internal damage happened during the impact event by … Show more

“…The main task of SHM is to detect the change in the integrity of the mechanical structures as compared to the healthy structure. This task can be done by active sensing techniques such as guided waves [8], fiber optic techniques [9,10], electro-mechanical impedance [11], acoustic emission [12,13], or passive techniques which such as strain sensor [14] or stress-induced voltages from piezoelectric sensors [15]. Amongst them, piezoelectric-based sensing techniques have received huge attention in the field of SHM by both active and passive methods, as well as by different interfacing methods between the sensor and the host structure [16,17].…”

“…In particular, the damage generated by low-velocity impacts may be difficult or impossible to detect by visual inspection, since it often initiates and grows within the impacted composite facing without any evident dent or crack on the surface. This type of damage, known in aerospace applications as barely visible impact damage-BVID [3], can have a detrimental effect on the strength of the sandwich composite and lead to the ultimate collapse of the whole structure [4].…”
