| New Duck disease or infectious serositis or anatipestifer syndrome, an epizootic infectious disease of poultry, caused by Riemerella anatipestifer is responsible for severe mortality in ducks world-wide. The present study reveals the molecular characterization of outer membrane protein A gene (ompA) of R. anatipestifer isolated from ducks of Kerala as well as its application for developing control and diagnostic strategies for New Duck disease. Outer membrane protein A gene of three isolates of R. anatipestifer from ducks of Kerala were amplified by PCR and cloned in T/A vector. After sequencing of the amplicons, the sequence similarity analysis was done using selected software. The sequence analysis of the gene showed that no much variation of ompA existed among the isolates and that all the isolates were similar to a Taiwanese strain of R. anatipestifer. The results emphasise that the ompA gene of R. anatipestifer could be utilised for developing diagnostic and control strategies for New Duck disease.

The dawn of a new Proteomics era, just over a decade ago, allowed for large-scale protein profiling studies that have been applied in the identification of distinctive molecular cell signatures. Proteomics provides a powerful approach for identifying and studying these multiple molecular markers in a vast array of biological systems, whether focusing on basic biological research, diagnosis, therapeutics, or systems biology. This is a continuously expanding field that relies on the combination of different methodologies and current advances, both technological and analytical, which have led to an explosion of protein signatures and biomarker candidates. But how are these biological markers obtained? And, most importantly, what can we learn from them? Herein, we briefly overview the currently available approaches for obtaining relevant information at the proteome level, while noting the current and future roles of both traditional and modern proteomics. Moreover, we provide some considerations on how the development of powerful and robust bioinformatics tools will greatly benefit high-throughput proteomics. Such strategies are of the utmost importance in the rapidly emerging field of immunoproteomics, which may play a key role in the identification of antigens with diagnostic and/or therapeutic potential and in the development of new vaccines. Finally, we consider the present limitations in the discovery of new signatures and biomarkers and speculate on how such hurdles may be overcome, while also offering a prospect for the next few years in what could be one of the most significant strategies in translational medicine research.

A septicemic outbreak in southern Taiwan duck farms in 2014 resulted in high mortality of ducklings. Samples from oral or cloacal sites of a®ected Muscovy and Pekin ducks were collected and the identity of the¯eld isolates was con¯rmed using Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) 16S rRNA and outer membrane protein A (OmpA)-speci¯c primers in polymerase chain reactions (PCR), with 15 isolates found positive for both 16S rRNA and OmpA. Detection of both the 16S rRNA and OmpA genes could be a rapid PCR test for RA. Serotyping of the isolates using gel-di®usion precipitin test identi¯ed serotypes 1, 4, 6, 17, and 19 while a number of isolates were unidenti¯able. Sequence analysis of the OmpA gene found high identity (99.0-99.7%) among isolates in Taiwan. These results indicate that RA remains as a signi¯cant cause of duck septicemic disease in southern Taiwan.
