Immunomodulatory Activity of a New Family of Antioxidants Obtained from Grape Polyphenols

Abstract: We examined the potential antioxidant activity and the immunopharmacological activity of new epicatechin conjugates obtained by depolymerization of grape polymeric flavanols in the presence of cysteamine or cysteine and with or without gallate. The compounds studied were (-)-epicatechin (1), cysteinyl-epicatechin (2), cysteamine-epicatechin (3), (-)-epicatechin gallate (4), cysteinyl-epicatechin gallate (5), and cysteamine-epicatechin gallate (6) When incubated with an erythrocyte suspension, flavanols protect… Show more

“…These values are lower than epicatechin, a known antioxidant flavonoid that has reported an IC 50 value of 42.3 lg/mL (Mitjans et al, 2004). This indicates a higher antioxidant activity compared to epicatechin.…”

“…muscadine grape extracts in blood mononuclear cells, 56 ellagic acid in activated pancreatic stellate cells, 57 and epicatechin conjugates in whole blood. 58 However, there do not appear to be, at the writing of this paper, studies of IL-1β gene expression in similar paradigms with various fruit extracts. Interestingly, the piroxicam-induced decreases in IL-1β in the PX-KA group were similar to those seen in the BB-KA group.…”
