PURPOSE:To determine the effects of water-soluble derivative of green propolis in bladder cancer angiogenesis in rats given N-butyl-(-4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN). METHODS:Nine groups were established, where six of them (Groups 1 to 6), the animals received 0.05% BBN in their drinking water for 14 weeks. From the 32nd to the 40th week, Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were treated respectively with water, L-lysine (300 mg/kg/ day), celecoxib (30 mg/kg/day) and propolis (300 mg/kg/day). Groups 5 and 6 were given propolis and L-lysine from the 1st to the 40th week (150 mg/kg/day). Microvascular density was determined by histological sections stained for the marker CD-31 and analyzed with specific software. RESULTS:The microvascular density in bladder carcinomas was lower (p<0.01) in rats receiving propolis than in controls given carcinogen only. On the other hand, the microvascular density of tumors in rats receiving carcinogen and L-lysine for 40 weeks from the beginning of carcinogen treatment was significantly higher (p<0.01) than in the corresponding controls. -Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira -Vol. 27 (8) 2012de beber por 14 semanas. Os grupos 5 e 6 receberam própolis e L lisina da 1ª a 40ª semana (150 mg/ kg/dia). A densidade microvascular foi determinada por cortes histológicos corados pelo CD-31 e analisados por programa de computador específico. RESULTADOS:A densidade microvascular em carcinomas de bexiga foi menor com p<0,01 nos ratos que receberam própolis do que nos carcinomas do grupo controle que recebeu apenas carcinógeno. Por outro lado, a densidade microvascular de tumores de ratos que receberam carcinógeno e L-Lisina por 40 semanas desde o início do carcinógeno foi significantemente maior com p<0,01 que a densidade microvascular dos tumores de seu respectivo grupo controle. CONCLUSÃO:A própolis verde solúvel em água inibiu a angiogênese em câncer de bexiga induzido pelo BBN, enquanto a L-lisina estimulou a angiogênese quando iniciada juntamente com o BBN.

RESUMO:Agentes químicos têm sido usados para auxiliar na inibição da formação do biofilme e impedir desenvolvimento da doença periodontal (DP). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar radiograficamente a ação do extrato de própolis na progressão da DP induzida em ratos. Foram utilizados 48 ratos Wistar, divididos em 4 grupos (n=12): Controle, Pincel, Própolis e Clorexidina. Os grupos foram subdivididos para análise aos 7 e 21 dias. A progressão da DP foi avaliada radiograficamente pela distância entre a junção cemento-esmalte e a crista óssea alveolar na face mesial do 1º molar inferior. A perda óssea foi significativamente menor nos animais do grupo própolis em ambos os períodos (p ≤ 0,01). Concluiu-se por análise radiográfica que a aplicação tópica do extrato de própolis interfere reduzindo a progressão da doença periodontal induzida por ligadura em ratos, demonstrando a importância desse composto como substância auxiliar no tratamento periodontal.Palavras-Chave: Periodontia, Própolis, Radiografia.ABSTRACT: Results of topical application of propolis extracts in reducing progression of periodontal disease. Chemical agents have been used to assist on inhibiting biofilm formation and on preventing the development of periodontal disease (PD). The aim of this study was to radiographically evaluate the action of propolis extract on the progression of PD induced in rats. 48 Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (n = 12): Control, Brush, Propolis and Chlorhexidine. The groups were subdivided for analysis at 7 and 21 days. The progression of the periodontal disease was radiographically assessed by the distance between the cement-enamel junction and the alveolar bone crest mesial of the 1st molar. Bone loss was significantly lower in the Propolis group in both periods (p ≤ 0.01). By radiographic analysis, it is concluded that the topical application of propolis extract interferes by reducing the progression of ligature-induced periodontal disease in rats, demonstrating the importance of this compound as an auxiliary substance in periodontal treatment.

Antibacterial activity of propolis-based toothpastes for endodontic treatment

This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of propolis-based toothpastes used as intracanal medication in endodontic treatment. The propolis-based toothpastes were prepared using an extract established in previous studies (identified as A70D and D70D). Calcium hydroxide paste was used as a control. The diffusion-well method on double-layer agar was used in a culture medium of Tryptic Soy Agar. The plates were kept at room temperature for two hours to allow the diffusion of pastes in the culture medium, and then incubated at 35º C for twenty-four hours in aerobiosis and in microaerophilia (S. mutans). After this period, the total diameter of the inhibition halo was measured. The results were analyzed by ANOVA analysis of variance, followed by the Tukey test at p<0.05. The propolis-based toothpastes presented antibacterial activity against 83.3% of the analyzed bacteria. For 66.7% of these bacteria, the propolis-based toothpastes exhibited greater antibacterial activity than calcium hydroxide. The present results allow us to conclude that the experimental pastes A70D and D70D showed good activity against aerobic bacteria, proving more effective than calcium hydroxide.Uniterms: Propolis/antibacterial activity. Endodontics/ treatment.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade antibacteriana de formas farmacêuticas a base de própolis para uso no tratamento endodôntico como medicação intracanal. As formulações de própolis, em forma de pastas, foram preparadas a partir de um extrato pré-estabelecido em estudos anteriores e identificadas como A70D e D70D. Como controle, foi utilizado pasta de hidróxido de cálcio. (26.5 -coagulase negativa) e Staphylococcus epidermidis (6epi). Foi utilizado o método poço difusão em camada dupla de ágar, em meio de cultura Tryptic Soy Agar. As placas foram mantidas à temperatura ambiente por 2 h para permitir a difusão das pastas no meio de cultura, e então incubadas a 35 ºC por 24 h em aerobiose e em microaerofilia (S. mutans). Após este período, foi medido o diâmetro total do halo de inibição. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de análise de variância ANOVA seguido do teste de Tukey com p<0,05. As pastas a base de própolis apresentaram atividade antibacteriana contra 83,3% das bactérias analisadas. Para 66,7% das bactérias, as pastas de própolis apresentaram maior atividade
