Immunomodulation by gadolinium chloride-induced Kupffer cell phagocytosis blockade

Abstract: Gadolinium chloride (GdCl ), a rare earth metal salt, depresses macrophage activity, and is commonly used to study the physiology of 3 the reticuloendothelial system. In the present work, the effect of GdCl -induced Kupffer cell blockade on the humoral immune response in 3 mice to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was investigated. Kupffer cell phagocytosis blockade was found to increase both the primary and secondary immune responses to SRBC. The primary immune response was significantly augmented in animals injec… Show more

“…To observe whether KC cells participated into the immune response to pre‐erythrocytic malaria through TLR9 signalling, we detected the parasite liver load of mice injected with GdCl 3 prior to CpG treatment. GdCl 3 is a rare earth metal salt which was used to interfere selectively KC cells phagocytosis (18,25,26). Inhibiting the phagocytosis of KC cells by GdCl 3 at 24 h prior to CpG injection, the liver Plasmodium load increased significantly with comparison to CpG group (Figure 4).…”

“…Feng et al () showed that long‐term Ln uptake could significantly deplete serum IgA and thus affect immunity in the population from light Ln mining area (South Jiangxi, China). While GdCl 3 intravenously injected to mice could induce the Kupffer cell phagocytosis blockade, which increased both the primary and the secondary humoral immune responses (Lázár et al, ), intravenous administration of GdAc to rats caused an increase in white blood cell count and serum cholesterol (Bussi et al, ). These studies suggested that Ln could affect the immune system.…”
