Immunohistochemical study on the prognostic value of MIB-1 in gastric carcinoma

Abstract: Summary The prognostic significance of tumour cell proliferation was investigated in a series of 418 gastric carcinomas using the monoclonal antibody MIB-1. Owing to strong intratumoural heterogeneity of MIB-1 expression three different proliferation indices (PIs) were determined in all carcinomas: (1) PImax in areas of maximal tumour cell proliferation, (2) PIrand in areas randomly distributed over the whole tumour, (3) Plfront in areas exclusively located at the tumour invasion front. There was a strong inte… Show more

“…Similarly, we found a correlation between Ki-67 activity and extent of invasion. However, this conflicts with the results of several previous studies (42)(43)(44). Moreover, few authors have shown a relationship between Ki-67 and clinicopathological findings in gastric cancer, including lymph node metastases and venous invasion (24,45).…”

“…Similarly to other authors [12][13][14], we found no correlation between Ki-67, PCNA and MCM2 PI in the main mass of tumour and certain clinicopathological parameters (Tables 1, 2). On the other hand, Ki-67 PI has been reported to be significantly higher in the intestinal-type cancers by Lauren's classification as compared to the diffuse type [15,16]. High PCNA PI has been more frequent in the intestinal than in the diffuse type [17].…”

“…A case was categorized as ''negative'' for a certain antibody when immunoreactivity was present in <5% of tumor cells. Tumor cell proliferation was analyzed using the Ki67 immunoreactivity as previously described (35).…”
