Immunohistochemical expression of matrix metalloproteinases 1, 2, 7, 9, and 26 in the calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor

Abstract: The staining of these metalloproteinases, with the exception of MMP-2, suggests their contribution to tumor growth and expansion. The presence of these metalloproteinases in stromal cells reveals the active participation of these cells in the degradation of the extracellular matrix, contributing to the growth of the tumor studied.

“…All MMPs evaluated in the present study were detected both in neoplastic odontogenic epithelium and adjacent stroma of CCOT in variable amounts, confirming previous findings . Although MMPs expression level in both neoplastic odontogenic epithelium and adjacent stroma of CCOT is known to be lower than in ameloblastoma and keratocystic odontogenic tumour , our results revealed a higher expression ratio of MMP‐9 in neoplastic epithelium compared to stroma in CCOT, mainly in ghost cells as already reported by others .…”

“…TIMP‐4 presents high affinity to MMP‐26 than to other MMPs (MMP‐26 > MMP‐9 > MMP‐7 > MMP‐3 > MMP‐2 > MMP‐1, respectively) . Indeed, MMP‐26 is expressed in CCOT , suggesting that TIMP‐4 high expression observed here may be explained by the inhibition of ECM degradation by MMPs.…”

“…The comparison of the expression of matrixins with that of their inhibitors and inducers may provide further insight with regard to the significance of these enzymes in the alterations of bone tissue adjacent to the pathological lesions. Expression of numerous MMPs was confirmed in the parenchymal and stromal component of calcifying odontogenic cysts (COCs) (37). Previously, a COC was considered to be a calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (30).…”

“…In turn, the proteolytic properties of these enzymes contribute to the formation of metastatic foci [ 14 , 51 , 74 , 75 , 76 ]. Importantly, the expression of particular MMPs is found in different types of odontogenic tumors, such as ameloblastoma, ameloblastic carcinoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors, and odontomas [ 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 ]. In patients with calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors, overexpression has been associated with the progression of this type of cancer [ 79 ].…”

“…Importantly, the expression of particular MMPs is found in different types of odontogenic tumors, such as ameloblastoma, ameloblastic carcinoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors, and odontomas [ 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 ]. In patients with calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors, overexpression has been associated with the progression of this type of cancer [ 79 ]. A brief summary of the role of MMPs in diseases of the stomatognathic system is shown in Figure 3 .…”
