“…In his silver‐stained material, Groth could not identify a close relation of the Endkolben to any kind of ‘helper‐cell’ and claimed all the sensory endings were of a non‐encapsulated nature. We would agree with this last conclusion, but our techniques of labelling the innervating fibre, combined with SV2 and Hoechst staining, allowed us to show (1) that the racemes (Groth's Endkolben) are innervated by the vagus nerve; (2) that cells are characteristically associated with the vagal nerve terminals; (3) that these cells form a compact aggregate and are SV2‐positive, suggesting the presence of neurosecretory vesicles (Buckley & Kelly, 1985); and (4) that the SV2‐positive cells within the raceme are also positive for serotonin, a feature that is characteristic of neuroendocrine cells in other parts of the respiratory tract of birds (Salvi & Renda, 1992; Lopez et al. 1993; Adriaensen et al.…”
