Innovative composites based on an amorphous-carbon matrix containing a second phase ZnO oxide and/or highly dispersed Zn metallic were synthesized via a modified Pechini route, in which a partial pyrolysis method was reached. Studies of adsorption in the dark and the photocatalytic activity for the cationic azo-dye, basic blue 41, and degradation were carried out. X-ray diffraction patterns for the carbon matrix and its composite with Zn show characteristics of the amorphous carbon. The infrared in the mid region of the composite prepared with ZnO and Zn exhibit vibrational bands related to bonds zinc oxide. The surface pH of the material is the main factor responsible for the adsorption of the azo-dye, but the contribution of mesopores favored the diffusion of molecules from the bulk of solution to the pore framework. Esters-like functional groups on the surface of carbons hinder the adsorption of the azo-dye. When Zn is embedded within amorphous carbon the photocatalytic activity of the composites showed up to 2.4 higher than neat ZnO. The enhancement in the photocatalytic activity and stability of C/ZnO/Zn and C/Zn composites is discussed in terms of a protector effect by the carbon layers inserted in composites. Carbon layers are responsible to inhibit the lixiviation of ZnO particles along irradiation.

“…Shen et al [ 140 ] constructed C 3 N 4 /CdS nanostructures on CFCs, and the prepared filter membrane-type photocatalysts showed excellent activity (such as 99% MB and 98% AO7) for different pollutants under visible light irradiation, mainly attributed to enhanced light absorption and photocurrent, as well as the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Behpour et al [ 141 ] prepared a stable and flexible photocatalyst by fixing Fe 2 O 3 /TiO 2 on CFCs and investigated its activity in degrading the textile dye BB41 under visible light. The results showed that the sample degraded 97.54% of BB41 in 240 min, and only 13% of the photoactivity was lost after 7 reaction cycles (28 h).…”

Driven by various environmental and economic factors, it is emerging to adopt an efficient and sustainable strategy to recycle carbon fibers (rCFs) from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) wastes and reuse them in high-value applications. This review summarized the latest progress of CFRP waste recycling methods (including mechanical, chemical, and thermal methods), discussed their advantages and disadvantages, influence parameters and possible environmental effects, and their potential effects on the mechanical and surface chemical properties of rCFs. In addition, the latest optimization schemes of leading recycling technologies were detailed. According to the literature, CFs are the key points in the structural support of semiconductor-based recyclable photocatalytic systems and the enhancement of performance, which means that rCFs have high reuse potential in sustainable photocatalysis. Therefore, this paper also emphasized the possibility and potential value of reusing recovered fibers for developing recyclable photocatalytic products, which may be a new way of reuse in environmental purification often ignored by researchers and decision-makers in the field of CFs.

Among the technologies proposed for wastewater treatment, the Advanced Oxidation Processes are viable and technological strategies for dyes degradation. Different photocatalytic systems classified in metal oxides alone or combined through hybrid composites or immobilized onto supports have been designed in various nanostructured shapes for their application in the photodegradation of polluting dyes. This review aims to describe the dyes as an environmental threat, photocatalysis as an effective process to remove dyes from water and provide an overview of the recent studies using photocatalytic systems grouped according to their development. Furthermore, this review describes the main parameters of a photocatalytic system with an important role in dye photodegradation. Finally, we discuss the limitations of photocatalysis for real industrial applications and the challenges for this environmental nanotechnology.
