Immobilization of microbial cells: A promising tool for treatment of toxic pollutants in industrial wastewater

Abstract: The review articles on cell immobilization have been published since 1980 and reflect the general interest in this topic. Immobilized microbial cells create opportunities in a wide range of sectors including environmental pollution control. Compared with suspended microorganism technology, cell immobilization shows many advantages, such as resistance to toxic chemicals. This review presents the potential of immobilized microbial cells for treatment of toxic pollutants in industrial wastewater, the fundamentals… Show more

“…However, the mechanisms and the influence of biological factors determining the performance of the immobilized cells remains poorly understood. Various biological factors can influence the metabolic response of immobilized cells such as age of cells, physiological state, shape, extracelluar polymeric substances, surface proteins or environmental factors such as pH, oxygen concentration, nutrient availability, etc …”

“…As biological approach using bacteria is a favorable applied microorganism (Alalewi & Jiang, 2013;Novotny et al, 2011), improvement of this approach must be done. The use of immobilized microbial cells in the field of wastewater treatment has been found to be beneficial as it is offer multitude of advantages include long retention time of biomass in the system, ease of use in a continuous reactor and their ability for scale up (Gorecka & Jastrzebska, 201;Suzana et al, 2013). Moreover, immobilized microorganisms could be cost effective since it can be used several times without significant loss of activity (Bashan et al, 2010;Martins et al, 2012).…”

“…The application of immobilized cells in industrial applications was reports by several research groups over the world which has successfully attempted microbial immobilization as a viable alternative in treatment of wastewater (Martins et al, 2012;Suzana et al, 2013, Nur Hazirah et al, 2014. Thus, the immobilized microbial cell technology has been discovered as promising treatment in wastewater for future prospective.…”

“…The petroleum degradation needs the participation of more bacteria strains, but competition may exist among different bacteria strains and exerts negative effect on the degradation. Thus, it was a necessity to use gene engineering bacteria to remove petroleum pollutant [11] . Gene engineering bacteria is recombining the degrading genes of different bacteria and combining the metabolism approaches of pollutant in different bacteria to form super degrading bacteria with special degradation function and enhance the degradability of bacteria and enhance the bioremediation effect.Researchers find that Pseudomonas.…”
