Immobilised lipases in the cosmetics industry

Abstract: Commercial products for personal care, generally perceived as cosmetics, have an important impact on everyday life worldwide. Accordingly, the market for both consumer products and specialty chemicals comprising their ingredients is considerable. Lipases have started to play a minor role as active ingredients in so-called 'functional cosmetics' as well as a major role as catalysts for the industrial production of various specialty esters, aroma compounds and active agents. Interestingly, both applications almo… Show more

“…Enzymes most commonly studied in the immobilized form are lipases (Sakai et al 2010;Adlercreutz 2013;Ansorge-Schumacher and Thum 2013). Lipases catalyse the hydrolysis of esters formed by short-and long-chain alcohols, mono-and multi-hydroxides, and saturated and unsaturated carboxylic acids of short and long chains.…”

“…Cytochrome c is a small redox protein (12.4 kDa) [12] and has been widely used as a model system to investigate the adsorption of proteins on MPS [13]. CALB is a hydrolase enzyme (33 kDa) [14] that is widely used in biocatalysis [15][16][17] due to its broad substrate range, high activity and stability. CALB has been successfully immobilized by several methods [18][19][20] onto various solid supports [21][22][23][24].…”

“…Companies such as Avecia, Basf, Evonik, DSM, Dow Pharma, and Lonza use enzymes or cells for chiral synthesis of their products [228]. Evonik is also producing specialty esters, aroma compounds, and cosmetic agents using immobilized lipases [229]. According to OCDE, over 300 industrial processes are based on microbial enzymes [230].…”
