Kurds have a long history of victimization and struggle for even the most basic rights. This is reflected in a widely shared belief, according to which they have "no friends but the mountains." Such difficult history may have ongoing negative impact on mental health of present-day Kurds. This article investigates the relations between cognitive availability of historical trauma, historical trauma symptoms, and negative mental healthoutcomes in asample of young Kurds who live inthe Region of Kurdistan in Iraq. We also examined the potential protective role of strong identification as members of a national minority (Iraqi Kurds) and as members of an ethnic group (Kurdish people in general). The results showed that tragic group history is significantly related to negative mental health outcomes among young Iraqi Kurds. However, strong identification with other Iraqi Kurds (but not with Kurds in general) had an attenuating effect on the link between historical trauma and present-day negative mental health outcomes.

In this paper, we intend to deconstruct the term ‘tribalism’ as a colonial category, which figures as a prominent concept in social studies on Kurds as well as the Middle East at large. Blithely used, tribalism has occupied a central place, especially in the existing scholarship on Kurdistan. Some earlier anthropological works have gone so far as to regard tribalism as the ‘DNA’ of Middle Eastern people. Drawing on recent studies on Latin America, Africa and Central Asia, we argue that the use of tribalism as if it is the natural constitution of Kurdish society has caused a significant misrepresentation and oversimplification of socio‐political life in Kurdistan as well as the broader Middle East. In a way, the existing body of scholarship on this region has reproduced statist‐nationalist discourses at the expense of dominated communities (e.g., Kurds). The historical context of both colonial powers and nation‐states ‘combating tribes and tribalism’ coincided with the emergence of the discourse of racial biopolitics. Thus, the use of the term tribalism to define certain nations or ethnic groups should not be viewed as merely an application of socio‐anthropological categories. Hence, we argue that the ethical aspects and implications of the use of tribalism by both colonial powers and later by nation‐states to define certain ethnic groups must not be overlooked.

Jelen értekezés tárgya az iraki kurd politikai vezetés (Erbíl) és a török állami vezetés (An-kara) közötti kapcsolatok elemzése. Az értekezés kronologikus sorrendben vizsgálja a két fél kapcsolatát alakító kihívásokat és lehetőségeket, amelyek Irakon és Törökországon belül, il-letve regionálisan (a Közel-Keleten) jelentkeztek az 1991 és 2017 közötti időszakban. A disszertáció alapvetően kvalitatív kutatási módszereket alkalmaz, ezek közül pedig a szö-vegelemzés, illetve kisebb mértékben a diskurzuselemzés módszereit alkalmazom, vagyis el-sősorban primer és szekunder forrásokra épülő beavatkozás-mentes vizsgálatra (dokumentum-elemzés, szakirodalom elemzés, narratív elemzés) támaszkodom. Az elemzést magyar, angol és török nyelvű források bevonásával végzem, amelyek között különféle sajtótermékek, gazda-sági és politikai elemzések, valamint publikált személyes közlések, visszaemlékezések is helyet kapnak. A hipotézisekben felvetett állítások vizsgálatára, illetve a kutatási kérdések megválaszolá-sára a módszert a végkimenetel-magyarázó folyamatkövetés (explaining-outcome process tracing) kínálja. A disszertáció pluralista megközelítést alkalmaz, amelynek során éppúgy szá-mításba veszi az egyes szereplők belső dinamikáit, az egyén szerepét, illetve a rendszerszintű tényezőket, mint az anyagi és normatív megfontolásokat. Az értekezés új eredményeit részben a hipotézisek bizonyítása jelenti: 1. Ankara és Erbíl kapcsolata a konfliktusosból együttműködővé vált és az együttműkö-dés tartósan fennmaradt (elmélyült). Ezt az alábbi tényezők segíthették: a. Mind a nemzetközi rendszer, mind a szereplők által (is) alkotott regionális struktúra. (neorealista megközelítés) b. Az ankarai és erbíli vezetés közötti ideológiai és értékrendi közösség, valamint az országok közötti gazdasági és társadalmi kapcsolatok megélénkülése. (neo-liberális megközelítés) c. A felek egymás tekintetében az elutasító diskurzust felcserélték egy pragmati-kus, befogadó diskurzussal (elméleti szint), illetve a szereplők új magatartásu-kat a megváltozott percepciók alapján alakították ki (gyakorlati szint). (konst-ruktivista megközelítés) 2. Törökország és a Kurdisztáni Régió kapcsolata kiegyensúlyozatlan (aszimmetrikus). 3. Törökország Irakkal kapcsolatos érdekeire és érdekérvényesítési képességére kontinu-itás jellemző. a. Bár Törökország korszakonként eltérő hangsúllyal közelített az iraki szerep-lőkhöz, alapvető céljai, érdekei Irakban mindvégig azonosak maradtak. b. Törökország érdekérvényesítő képessége Irakon belül mindvégig gyenge ma-radt. 4. Mind Ankara, mind Bagdad, mind pedig Erbíl bizonyos cselekvési határok között egyensúlyoz (szűkre szabott mozgástér), és ezért korlátozza azokat a lépéseit, melyek a többiekre negatív hatását fejthetnek ki. Ezek a szereplők tehát finom egyensúlyozás-sal (delicate balancing) igyekeznek elkerülni a térvesztésüket, a bizonytalanságot és a kockázatokat. Az értekezés további új eredményei: • A Törökország és iraki Kurdisztán közti kapcsolatok vizsgálata szisztematikusan, új keretrendszerben történik • Néhány további részmegállapítás: 1. Barzáni érdekében állt a Bagdaddal való feszült viszony fenntartása 2. Kirkuk iraki kurd elfoglalása 2014-ben Ankara számára nem az iraki kurd függet-lenség felé vezető út egyik állomása, hanem gazdasági lehetőség 3. A függetlenség nem áll a KR politikai és gazdasági érdekében 4. A Davutoğlu-féle Ankara-Bagdad-Teherán háromszögre vonatkozó megfigyelés 5. Kísérletet tettem a Törökország és a KR közötti 2007 utáni viszony meghatározá-sára is. Állításom szerint Ankara és Erbíl kapcsolata az együttműködésből 2014-re informális szövetséggé (alignment) alakult
