Illuminating a Neglected Clinical Issue: Societal Costs of Interpersonal Dependency and Dependent Personality Disorder

Abstract: Contrary to clinical lore, trait dependency and DPD are associated with behaviors that lead to myriad negative consequences for the dependent person, those close to them, and society as a whole. These patterns have noteworthy implications for assessment and treatment of dependent patients and suggest that DPD should be included as a diagnostic category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition.

“…Because positive feedback from others is an essential component of selfworth for most dependent individuals, they are likely to be especially sensitive to interpersonal conflict and may take seemingly insignificant issues to heart (Bornstein, 2012a(Bornstein, , 2012bMiller, 2003). Hypersensitivity to interpersonal stressors, in turn, should heighten stress levels and tension within one's workgroup.…”

De modo geral, as pessoas que tem dependência emocional são descritas como submissas, com dificuldades de tomar decisões em seus relacionamentos, sentindo-se responsáveis por todos os acontecimentos e centrando-se completamente em sua relação.…”
