Childhood cancer is a life-threatening disease and the cause of great stress for children who suffer from its diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this study was to verify, through meta-analytical tools, whether children in active treatment for cancer differ in their psychological adjustment from healthy children. Ten studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the meta-analytic approach. A fixed effects model did not yield significant results, suggesting that there is no evidence for a difference in psychological adjustment between ill and healthy children, inasmuch as the former seem to adjust as well as the latter. Some methodological aspects are also considered, including issues related to the definition of psychological adjustment and its operationalisation and to the relative scarcity of published articles in this particular realm. Moreover, suggestions for future studies are discussed.

ResumoA dependência emocional é um transtorno caracterizado por comportamentos aditivos em relacionamentos amorosos. Entretanto, ainda há debate se esta dependência seria considerada uma patologia, como denominá-la e quais sintomas a definiriam. Assim, o presente estudo visa realizar uma avaliação sistemática da literatura acerca do tema, revisando artigos anexados nas bases de dados Scielo, Portal de Periódico CAPES e Google Acadêmico, publicados entre 2000 e 2014. Após uma análise criteriosa, foram selecionados 20 estudos. Os resultados mostraram que a dependência emocional é definida como um transtorno aditivo, no qual o indivíduo necessita do outro para manter seu equilíbrio emocional. Sua etiologia está relacionada ao desenvolvimento do apego na infância, além de fatores culturais e filogenéticos. Os tratamentos indicados são: terapia individual, terapia grupal, grupos de apoio e livros de autoajuda. Algumas inconsistências entre os estudos são discutidas, apontando a necessidade de mais estudos na área a fim de elucidar estas questões. EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF LITERATURE AbstractEmotional Dependency is a disorder characterized by addictive behaviors in romantic relationships. However, there is still controversy about whether this dependency should be considered pathological, as well as its appropriate denomination and the symptoms that would define it. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of the literature on emotional dependency, reviewing all the indexed articles in Scielo, CAPES, and Scholar Google databases, published between 2000 and 2014. After careful analysis, 20 studies were selected. The results show that emotional dependency is defined as an addictive disorder, in which the individual needs another to maintain his emotional balance. Its etiology is related to the development of attachment during childhood, in addition to cultural and phylogenetic factors. The indicated treatments are individual therapy, group therapy, support groups and selfhelp books. We point out some inconsistencies among the studies, showing the need for more research to elucidate these questions.

Correspondência verbal pode ser definida como a relação entre o comportamento verbal e o nãoverbal de um indivíduo. As pesquisas em correspondência verbal têm se utilizado de treinos de correspondência, uma técnica para estabelecer, manter, diminuir ou extinguir comportamentos não-verbais através do controle do comportamento verbal, em três fases: linha de base, reforçamento da verbalização e reforçamento da correspondência entre o comportamento verbal e o não-verbal. Esses treinos usam-se de três sequências diferentes: dizer-fazer, fazer-dizer e dizerfazer- dizer. Este artigo faz uma revisão das pesquisas na área de correspondência verbal nestas três diferentes seqüências. Ressalta, ainda, estudos atuais, que se preocuparam em descrever o fenômeno da correspondência e, portanto, não utilizaram metodologia experimental e, por consequência, não realizaram treino de correspondência e sim observaram a emergência da correspondência verbal natural.

Pesquisar sobre correspondência verbal pode auxiliar a identificar as variáveis que interferem na adesão ao tratamento, já que se verifica a relação entre o que o paciente diz e o que ele faz. Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever e analisar a correspondência dizer-fazer, em sua ocorrência natural, de três portadoras de diabetes mellitus tipo 2, sobre a sua prática de exercícios físicos. Foi perguntado aos participantes se eles iriam praticar exercícios físicos e, depois, esta prática foi filmada. Os dados revelaram que uma participante apresentou uma boa correspondência, outra apresentou correspondência parcial e a terceira não apresentou nenhuma correspondência Analisando-se os dados demográficos das participantes, levantou-se a hipótese de que variáveis como: escolaridade, nível sócio-econômico, idade e sedentarismo podem ter relação com o grau de correspondência verbal.

In Brazil, few studies have investigated the psychological aspects of childhood cancer. The aim of this article was to compare the psychological adjustment of children with cancer from different survival perspectives with that of children without cancer, besides examining potential risk factors. The sample consisted of 179 participants (6-14 years-old) recruited in two Brazilian public hospitals and three schools, and divided in three groups (relapsed, survivors and control). Children answered orally the self-reported Behavior Assessment Scale for Children, the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale and Piers-Harris’ Self-Concept Scale. No differences were found between groups regarding school and clinical maladjustment, personal adjustment, emotional symptoms and self-concept. Findings also showed positive associations between psychological maladjustment and gender, younger age, lower household income, single parenthood and lower levels of parental education. Conclusions indicate that children with cancer adapt well to the disease and do not present more psychological problems than controls.

Little is known about the psychological adjustment of parents of children with cancer relapse or remission. This study investigated differences in the psychological adjustment of caregivers of children with different cancer prognosis, by comparing them with a control group. In total, 183 caregivers participated in this study: those with children in relapse/on treatment (n = 32), remission/off treatment (n = 75), and “healthy” (n = 76). The Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories, the Symptom Check list-90-R, the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire-Reviewed and the Family Environment Scale were analyzed with Variance Analysis, Student’s t-test, Chi-square and Pearson correlations. The results showed that parents of children with cancer relapse presented less psychological adjustment. Furthermore, a protective effect of family cohesion and possible risk factors related to sociodemographic variables were observed. Conclusions highlight the convenience of developing specific interventions for parents of children with cancer relapse.
