IED modelling for IEC61850 based substation automation system performance simulation

Abstract: This paper introduces the modeling of Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) on OPNET modeler, a communication network modeling and simulation tool developed by OPNET TECHNOLOGIES. These configurable IED models allow to easily build Substation Automation System (SAS) network model with different topologies for all kinds of substations so that the dynamic performance issues could be studied during the planning stage and network performance problem could be caught ahead of the deployment stage. An example of using … Show more

“…Sidhu and Yin produced two publications [8], [9] showing how the OPNET Modeler network simulator can be used to model the substation communication network and analyse the network's dynamic performance (i.e., packet delay characteristics of time-critical services). Their model of SV traffic generator mapped packets directly onto Ethernet and, in their latter publication, included handling of IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tags.…”

“…Once the data packets transfer has been delayed and has not been reached to the target devices within the predetermined period of time, which may lead to extremely serious consequences, and endanger the substation and even the entire grid [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. The key objectives for designing any substation automation architecture are interoperability between the IEDs, satisfaction of communication performance, and extensibility of the architecture.…”

“…Also, the dynamic performance of the SAS network must be studied during the planning stage in order to catch the network performance problems ahead of the deployment stage [6]. The modeling of communication system requires the definition of objects (such as, data objects, data sets, report control, and log control, etc.)…”

“…According to the IEC 61850-5, the message transmission time requirements for the SAS network must be ensured under any operating conditions and contingencies inside the substation to be consistent. Moreover, the dynamic performance of the SAS network must be analyzed during the planning stage in order to find the network performance problems ahead of the deployment stage (Sidhu and Yin, 2006). The modeling of communication systems requires the definition of objects (such as data objects, data sets, report control, and log control) and services provided by the objects (such as get, set, report, create, and delete) (Sidhu and Yin, 2007;IEC, 2003).…”
