Identifying priority conservation areas for above-ground carbon sequestration in Central Mexico

Abstract: Identifying forest ecosystems with significant ecological, social, and/or economic values is an important first-step in conserving landscape function. Here, we identify priority conservation areas in the municipalities of Chignahuapan and Zacatlan, Puebla (Mexico), based on: (i) their capacity to sequester atmospheric CO2; and (ii) risk of future deforestation. We also explore management strategies for priority-lands conservation in the Mexican context. Aboveground C sequestration was estimated using wood dens… Show more

“…The identification, assessment, forecast, and protection of forests with high carbon sequestration can optimize resources and ensure the effectiveness of forest management strategies [8,9,10,11]. The priority conservation areas for carbon sequestration, which are territory defined by environmental characteristics threatened by human activities or natural causes [12], have already been used to promote the reduction of high rates of deforestation and restore degraded areas in other countries [13,14]. In Ecuador, there are deforestation studies related to change of land use, demography, and agricultural production [15].…”
