Identification of α-tocopherol and α-tocopheryl acetate from the cuticle of soybean pods armyworm (Spodoptera cosmioides)

Abstract: The chemical composition of the soybean pods armyworm Spodoptera cosmioides (Walker, 1858) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) larval cuticles was evaluated using gas chromatography coupled to a mass detector (GC-MS). Among the usual lipids found in the insect cuticle, α-tocopherol and α-tocopheryl acetate were also isolated from S. cosmioides. On the other hand, no vitamin E derivative was found in A. gemmatalis exuvia. This is the first report of vitamin E … Show more

“…Studies on the host-plant associations, temporal and spatial distribution, morphology, and biology of S. cosmioides have highlighted its importance as a pest of several crops, its low susceptibility to Bt protenis and to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium rileyi (Farlow) Samson (e.g., Specht and Corseuil, 2002;Bavaresco et al, 2002Bavaresco et al, , 2003Bavaresco et al, , 2004Specht et al, 2005;Zenker et al, 2007Zenker et al, , 2010Fronza et al, 2011;Bergamasco et al, 2013;Cabezas et al, 2013;Fronza et al, 2013;Bernardi et al, 2014;.…”

“…Despite this, the assessment of specific abundance (Fig. 3), coupled with larval polyphagy and studies on biology (Santos et al, 1980;Habib et al, 1983;Bavaresco et al, 2002Bavaresco et al, , 2003Bavaresco et al, , 2004Fernández et al, 2004;Santos et al, 2010;Cabezas et al, 2013;Fronza et al, 2013;Bernardi et al, 2014;Roque-Specht, 2016, 2019;Lutz et al, 2018;Loureiro et al, 2020;Machado et al, 2020;Meriño-Cabrera et al, 2020;Barcellos et al, 2022), thermal requirements, and ecological zoning (Parra et al, 2022), suggest that this species may pose greater harm to cultivated plants in warmer (tropical and equatorial) areas of Brazil and other American countries. In this context, it is noteworthy that the agricultural occupation process of the Central-West and northern regions of Brazil only began in the 1970s and continues to expand northward (Miranda, 2020).…”

“…The relevance of S. cosmioides (often referred to as S. latifascia or S. ornithogalli) as a pest is also reflected by corresponding publications for Argentina (Rizzo, 1977;Pastrana, 2004;Urretabizkaya et al, 2010), Bolivia (Rogg, 2000), Brazil (Gallo et al, 2002), Colombia (Posada Ochoa, 1989), Paraguay (Resquin-Romero, 2000), Peru (Dioses and Colchado, 2017), Venezuela (Salinas, 1967) and Uruguay (Biezanko et al, 1974;Bentancourt and Scatoni, 2006). In addition, subsidies for the management of this species have been provided, both in plant nurseries and large annual crops, such as cotton and soybean (Santos et al, 1980;Habib et al, 1983;Bavaresco et al, 2002Bavaresco et al, , 2003Bavaresco et al, , 2004Fernández et al, 2004;Santos et al, 2010;Cabezas et al, 2013;Fronza et al, 2013;Bernardi et al, 2014;Lutz et al, 2018;Loureiro et al, 2020;Machado et al, 2020;Meriño-Cabrera et al, 2020;Barcellos et al, 2022).…”
